Jay Som inspires my next existential crisis at the Colectivo Backroom

Earlier this week Jay Som played a show with Soccer Mommy and Stef Chura in the backroom of Colectivo. The “fuzz-loving” band is touring to promote their album Everybody Works, which, according to their bandcamp, weds “lo-fi rock to hi-fi home orchestration,” and weaves “evocative autobiographical poetry into energetic punk, electrified folk, and dreamy alt-funk.”

The opener Soccer Mommy is lo-fi with West Coast intonation, the clarity of the lead singer’s voice layered over wispy, boggy sound. Their outfits reminded me exactly of Lindsay Lohan’s band from Freaky Friday, in the best way possible.

“That’s the fun one, the rest are going to be sad,” said lead Sophie before the band played their song “Inside Out.” The band distracted an instrument change with a drum jam. After a few songs, Sophie stood on stage alone to croon the song “Alison,” which she promised would “get you feeling bummed.”

The next act, Stef Chura, sounds like a raspy Regina Spektor. The songs draw out and spiral, elongated and earthy. Her voice, reminiscent of folk, twanged. “Isn’t it funny how life is meaningless?” she quipped before playing a song she wrote 10 years prior at 18 years old.

Jay Som opened with “Just in Time.” Melina Duterte stood on stage to the very far right, their bassist dead center donning a Steely Dan shirt. Their drummer to the back is an-Animal-from-the-Muppets type with strong eyebrows and bleached hair, that is to say, throughout the show I remarked to my forever-plus-one Hannah about how crazy talented he is.

Jay Som’s sound is unabashed. It’s a surprise when you’re expecting shy and cloying based on studio versions of the songs. They create an atmosphere that delights, an echoed wonder. The layers of drums, guitar, bass, reverb, distortion all feed each other until it reaches cataclysm. I’d call it Good Shoegaze if the labels “bedroom pop” or “dream pop” hadn’t already been affixed to their art.

The band members themselves are pretty cheeky. At one point, the three in front assume warrior poses in a jokingly serious manner. Melina remarked it’s their second time in Milwaukee, having played at Cactus Club before, and that it’s good to be back. They played “One More Time Please,” which I’m interpreting as a subliminal message that they’ll be back in the mil again soon.

Here, the drumming began gently and suddenly the audience was hit with capital-letter SOUND. Jay Som replicates a sonic boom in the way their songs build. At the very least, this is what I’d imagine a forest fire sounds like: melancholic, powerful, weirdly beautiful. They played “Turn Into” and went ham.

They announced a song off their newest release: “Baybee.” It seems to be about a roundabout conversation with a moody significant other that leaves the speaker feeling insecure and maybe a little annoyed. The chorus is on theme with the angst of the rest of the set, going, “If I leave you alone/ When you don’t feel right/ I know we’ll sink for sure/ I’ll play your game once more/ If you don’t feel right/ If you don’t feel right.” The ever present vulnerability in the lyrics is a fitting pair for the listless weight of Melina’s voice. We feel as if we are given a window into a certain sadness or wondering, but instead find our own emotions exposed.

Then comes, “The Bus Song,” which, according to Melina, is “about stuff and things.” She sharply inhaled in a pause.

The show wrapped up with their ever-popular Sad Girl Jam, “I think you’re alright.” We left enchanted, which I think is the desired effect.

INTERVIEW: Skating Polly

Times are good for Washington-by-way-of-Oklahoma punk band Skating Polly. Tonight, the band plays another gig opening for punk legends X, who are on their 40th anniversary tour at Turner Hall Ballroom. The band will also be kicking off Riot Fest in Chicago tomorrow. We got to catch up with the band and talk about their big plans for the rest of the year here. Check it out:

B&E: Introduce yourselves! Who are you?

SP: We’re Skating Polly (Kelli, Kurtis, and Peyton). We’re an ugly pop band from Oklahoma City, now located in Tacoma, WA.

B&E: You’re on X’s 40th anniversary tour. How did that come about?

SP: Me and Peyton have known Exene since 2010 when she played a solo show in our hometown. We totally geeked out on her about X and 70s and 80s punk and she ended up giving us her email to send our demos to. So we did, and next thing I know she’s flying down to Oklahoma to produce our second record. That was the hugest accomplishment for us. She made our dreams come true and we’ve stayed close like family ever since. But being so close to Exene didn’t make it any less surprising and exciting when they offered us some shows with them!!

B&E:  What’s your favorite part about touring with the band?

SP: The advice, jokes, and stories. I LOVE making small talk with X. I walk away from every interaction with them either chuckling or beaming. But also watching their set every night. It’s different EVERY TIME! And they’ve never played a bad show Every set of theirs gives me a new favorite X song.

B&E: You’re playing Riot Fest on Friday, too! How does it feel to play a big festival like that?

SP: We’re so stoked to be going back!! I feel so spoiled but after getting to experience riot fest as an artist, I wouldn’t want to have it any other way. In 2015 we played the Denver and Chicago fest We got to watch The Dwarves, Babes in Toyland, Death Grips, Iggy Pop, Ice Cube, Cypress Hill, GZA, but the definite highlight for me was watching L7 from the side of the stage with Kat Bjelland. This amazing photographer David Kindler snapped a really beautiful pic of us from that night, and it’s one of my favorite moments of my life to have captured. It was also pretty surreal to be eating backstage and always spot a different badass musician chowing down only a couple tables away. In Chicago I worked up the nerve to introduce myself to Thurston Moore, he was so kind and I was just GEEKING out. Anyway it was an all around wonderful experience, can’t wait for this Friday!

B&E: Are there any other bands you’re trying to catch at Riot Fest this year?

SP: So many! Nine Inch Nails, New Order, X (of course!!), Buzzcocks, and Tobacco. And we’re missing so many too! Queens of the Stone Age, Wu-Tang, M.I.A, Dinosaur Jr., The Orwells! We’ve wanted to see The Orwells for so long!!

B&E:  Lastly, you’re coming to Milwaukee. What’s your beer of choice?

SP: Ginger beer! XD

AUDIO: Hot Science – “Slow Dance Vol. 1” (Premiere)

Milwaukee’s electronic music scene is definitely pulsating as of late, and the music being made in the process is nothing short of stellar. Today we get to premiere the latest from Hot Science, a beat tape entitled “Slow Dance Vol. 1”. The tape is a solid mix of electronica, with a heavy dose of vaporwave moving through the mix. The Nice FM artist that has also managed to cross over into hip hop recently, collaborating with members of Hiii Tribe to create the new Arthaus Bando collective in the process. It’s a very good time to be an electronic artist in Milwaukee, and drops like this one are another glowing piece to the bigger picture. Check out the premiere of “Slow Dance Vol. 1” below:

VIDEO: Yung Fayne – “Waiter”

Yung Fayne is gearing up for the release of his new mixtape, “Strictly For My City”, and in the build up, we get crisp new visuals for his single, “Waiter”. Fayne has been busy, putting out a steady stream of music and videos recently, with some of his best efforts coming on his solo work. The track combines a number of influences, including some hyper percussion reminiscent of north side hip hop, and contemporary elements like an autotune-driven melody. “Waiter” appears on the upcoming mixtape, which is due out next month.  Check out the video below:

INTERVIEW: The Safes

There’s a lot of great music coming to Milwaukee this week, but if you’re not feeling some of the bigger venues in town, there’s a great touring option coming to Circle-A this Friday night. Chicago natives The Safes have just released their most recent record, “Tasty Waves”, and are embarking on a tour shortly after garnering the attention of the national media. We caught up with Frankie O’Malley, one of the three O’Malley brothers in the band, to learn more about the record and upcoming tour.

B&E: Introduce Yourself! Who are you?

FOM: Hello, this is Frankie O’Malley of The Safes.

B&E: For those that haven’t heard you before, how would you describe your sound

FOM: I always like to let others answer this question.  I think Jedd Beaudoin of Pop Matters hit the nail on the head with this description!

“Chicagoland’s The Safes have been delivering hook-laden anthems since 2003 with brothers Frankie and Patrick O’ Malley’s uncanny pop and pub sensibilities leading the charge. The latest offering, Tasty Waves, treats listeners to 10 tracks channeling Big Star, Guided By Voices and Rockpile. ‘Mediocre Jokers’ and ‘Nobody Cares Anymore’ recall the amphetamine-addled Beatles in their Hamburg days, but filtered through the future tense of New Wave, LSD and the oncoming train of postmodern irony.”

Plus there’s a link to our new album here and everyone can decide for themselves.

B&E: Your new record, “Tasty Waves” just came out. What was it like making this record?

FOM: It was like being responsible for taking care of everything on Thanksgiving Day and having left overs to enjoy, only these will last forever.   Let me tell you it was a lot fun!  My brother Patrick (guitar), Dex Fontaine (drums), Curt Schmelz (bass) and I tracked the entire album live with one of our favorite record producers and friends at the helm Brian Deck ( Modest Mouse, Shins).  We knocked out  a real banger in just  a few!

B&E: What’s your favorite song(s) on the album?

FOM: It’s a tie between “Streets and Sanitation” and “I Wish I Could Help You.”

B&E: You’re on tour through the end of November. What’s one non-essential thing you need to bring on tour with you?

FOM: Well if last weekend was any indication of that I’d have to say the majority of things I found in my wallet.

B&E:  Lastly, you’re coming to Milwaukee. Do you abandon Old Style for PBR?

FOM: Yes but I would do that in Chicago too!

AUDIO: Ace Parker – “Empty Promises & Chardonnay”

Combining melodies and hip hop bars effectively is a harder task than it sounds, but Milwaukee native Ace Parker manages to interchange between the two with ease on his new single, “Empty Promises & Chardonnay”. This is Ace’s first release in a few months, and its apparent that the down time has been spent writing and perfecting his craft. We’re assuming that as the weather gets colder, Ace Parker’s output will be heating up. While the project date might be TBD, we can still get a glimpse of what’s in the making with “Empty Promises & Chardonnay”, which you can check out below:

AUDIO: Sundial Mottos – “Sundial Mottos”

It’s generally assumed that when a new band puts out a debut project, there’s a little bit of leeway given for the band’s youth as a collective. However, the debut EP from Milwaukee’s Sundial Mottos needs no room for error, as the band have crafted five well written and performed tracks that fit effortlessly with one another. The songs show tremendous potential for a very new band, almost feeling like a head start for a quartet that doesn’t need it. There’s a lot of fuzzy, buzzy indie rock being made in Milwaukee, but Sundial Mottos have a certain way of going about their sound that could cut through all of that to make a big impact locally and beyond. Stream their debut EP and pick it up via Bandcamp below:

AUDIO: Reggie Bonds – “Dark Wave”

There are certain artists in Milwaukee that, when they drop music, you know it will be something completely unique to that artist and make an impact on the city’s scene overall. Reggie Bonds is definitely one of those artists, and proves that theory correct on his new project, “Dark Wave”. On the new project, Bonds mixes dark, trap-friendly beats with a flow that mixes contemporary hip hop with more lyrical styles when the track calls for it. One thing that’s undeniable is that Reggie Bonds has an abundance of creativity and range, and that’s shown on “Dark Wave”. Check out the project below:

AUDIO: Lex Allen Featuring Taj Raiden and Q The Sun – “Venus And Serena”

Surprise! Although it’s been teased for a little bit on social media, Lex Allen’s new single, “Venus And Serena” is out now. The track features Q The Sun and Taj Raiden, and it’s definitely got the feel of a weekend club banger. With an extra hyper tempo, Lex is distinctively himself on this track, letting his personality shine on the track. A verse from Taj only adds to the pandemonium,  mixing hip hop with an EDM feel. This is definitely not the last we’re hearing from Lex Allen before the end of the year, as there’s already been hints at a video for the track coming as well. Check out “Venus And Serena” below:

AUDIO: GGOOLLDD – “Excelsior Springs”

When GGOOLLDD make an announcement, they do it in a big way. Today is no different, as the band have a new single, announced the release date of their next EP, and have a new label as well. The band announced today that they are officially part of the Roll Call Records family, and that their new EP, entitled “Teeth”, will be out via the label on December 1st. If you’ve been to a GGOOLLDD show recently, including gigs at Turner Hall and Summerfest, you’ve heard the new single, but it’s great to have the recorded version, as it’ll quickly become a fan favorite. We get a preview of what’s to come with the new single, “Excelsior Springs”, which you can check out below. Congratulations to the band!

AUDIO: SPEAK Easy – “Rockin’ Like This” (Premiere)

Sheesh. We have the honor of premiering new music from SPEAK Easy today, and it’s a tough track for sure. “Rockin’ Like This” features Speak going in over Stalley and Schoolboy Q’s “NineteenEighty7” instrumental, bringing some serious bars on his verses and a catchy hook. Anytime Speak gets on the mic, you generally know that you’re getting some high quality output, and this track is no exception. You can’t help but nod along to this one. Watch for more music from SPEAK Easy in the near future, and check out the premiere of “Rockin’ Like This” below:

VIDEO: Sean McGowan – “Costa Del Solution”

Hitting the road can feel a bit manic, and English indie artist Sean McGowan manages to capture that high-speed lifestyle in the video for his new single, “Costa Del Solution”. The track comes from McGowan’s EP, “Graft & Grief”, which comes out this Friday via Xtra Mile Recordings. The song is upbeat, with a tinge of a punk rock edge to a catchy indie pop track, and showcases McGowan’s songwriting ability. The video captures a trip from Southampton to Bournemouth, with all of the fun of a road trip vacation that can be packed into a three minute clip. The single gives us high hopes for the EP, and acts as a great introduction to Sean McGowan and his music. Check out the video for “Costa Del Solution” below:

AUDIO: The Rap Wolverine – “MoonGod”

It takes a lot of skill to back up your rap name, no matter what it is, but if your rap name carries the pressure of the visuals associated with The Rap Wolverine, you’d better bring some of your best bars. That’s exactly what he did, however, with his project, the “MoonGod” EP. With some extra-fresh production coming courtesy of Syndrome, The Rap Wolverine executes with a slick delivery. With a sound that a backpacker can nod his head to, this EP has a very authentic style to it. In three tracks, he can win you over with his sound, and can definitely have you reaching for the repeat button by the time the project is over. Check out the “MoonGod” EP below and hear for yourself:

AUDIO: Frida Sundemo – “Gold”

There are certain voices that lend themselves to big electronic productions, and Swedish singer Frida Sundemo is definitely one of them. Her latest single, “Gold” is accented by synths, pads, and upbeat digital percussion, creating a euphoric sounding sonic atmosphere around her. The single comes from her upcoming album, “Flashbacks & Futures”, due out on October 6th via Cosmos Music. Somehow bridging the gap between minimalism and expansive sounds, Frida is a name to keep tabs on if you’re a fan of synth pop. She definitely has the sound to cross over into mainstream success around the world, and you can get that sense by hearing “Gold” below:

AUDIO: Rob Hicks – “Paradise In Hell”

In the years that we’ve known Rob Hicks, we’ve watched him step his game up immensely. It goes without saying, then, that his new EP, “Paradise In Hell”, is some of his best work yet. With eight tracks in total, Hicks manages to not only steal the spotlight, but shine it brightly on himself, and shut down the rest of the stage while he’s at it. With production from several different artists, including Milwaukee’s Mike Regal, Hicks shows that he can take anyone’s beat and rip it to shreds. Features from Ted Park, Boodah DARR, Trapo, and Olita, we get a glimpse of what’s next in Wisconsin hip hop. Rob Hicks made us pay attention to the music coming out of Racine, and he’ll draw your attention with this EP. Stream “Paradise In Hell” here:

AUDIO: Teague Featuring LeanBeatz – “Percy”

Teague, aka Lvrd Teague and Pablo2Chainz, is one of the more intriguing young artists coming out of Milwaukee. With a trap star mentality and a natural talent that is displayed in his flow, he first came onto our radar around the beginning of the year. Since then, we’ve been checking for new music from him, and the latest installment in his catalog is “Percy” featuring LeanBeatz. The track, produced by Lean, keeps the energy up, with both artists riding the beat with ease. With the right promotion behind them, both artists could do something really significant in the near future in Milwaukee hip hop, and tracks like these will become “I told you so” moments later on. Check out some of the future of the city’s music scene on “Percy” below:

VIDEO: LBM Lil’ Joe – “New Slapp City”

Coming straight out of Milwaukee’s hip hop underground, LBM Lil’ Joe has amassed a following for himself, and manages to feed the streets, even when house arrest makes things difficult. Joe embraces the situation, though, with a performance video for the title track to his new mixtape, “New Slapp City”. Based around a sample flip from The O’ Jays classic “For The Love of Money”, Joe goes in with an up-tempo delivery on the track. “New Slapp City” is available now, and you can listen to it by clicking here, as well as check out the video below.

VIDEO: Mitch Pe$oz – “Wait A Minute”

Mitch Pe$oz is an emerging name, and really was able to make his way onto our radar with his “Late Night Sessions” EP released earlier this year. The first track from that EP, “Wait A Minute”, now has the visual accompaniment, with a video for the track being released last week. Pe$oz brings a well-crafted delivery to some smooth production, anchored by a killer sax sample. The video gets a little grimy, but Mitch Pe$oz keeps his delivery clean on the single. Check out the video for “Wait A Minute” below:

AUDIO: Dashcam Featuring Luxi and Zero Tep – “When I’m With You I Feel”

If Nice FM is becoming known for anything other than dreamy, synth filled pop, it’s their ability to combine artists from a variety of sub-styles within the electronic music realm and make them play nicely with one another. Label founder Dashcam returns with a new single today, and does just that on “When I’m With You I Feel”. The track features Nice FM member Luxi and Zero Tep, whose pop vocals add to an almost vaporwave sounding beat. Dashcam keeps it moving, though, keeping the track upbeat when Tep and Luxi’s vocals work to send you into a daydream. We’re always excited to see what Nice FM has in store next, and you can check out the latest with the new track below:

VIDEO: Von Alexander – “Jungle”

When it comes to consistently turning out quality work, Von Alexander is one of the names leading the charge in Milwaukee. From his recent “Mayhem1993” project (which recently was made available on all streaming services again), we have the visuals for “Jungle”, which dropped over the long weekend. The video is a collaboration between Von and Bren End Films, with some stellar imagery to match the feel of the track. Von continues to be one of the names elevating the bar in Milwaukee hip hop, and you can witness that firsthand with the video for “Jungle” below:

AUDIO: Von Alexander & Renz Young – “Of A Feather”

When you take a couple of the city’s most creative artists and bring them together, the end product can often be great. Von Alexander and Renz Young know this, and today we get the release of their collaborative EP, “Of A Feather”. We got first word of this project from Renz himself a little while back, but now it’s fully out for the world to see. “Of A Feather” is also significant, as it’s the first project being dropped under the Vogel Park Recordings label, whose roster is still largely unknown at this point. The project is currently only available via Apple Music, but if you don’t have the streaming service, you can also check out a single from the EP, “Otherside (Redux)” below:

AUDIO: Sharrod Sloans – “Catch Me Out” (Featuring Lil’ Fat) and “Back To The Pad”

When Sharrod Sloans’ “May Flowers” 1 & 2 dropped, there was hints from the artist formerly know as Pizzle that another installment might be on the way, even though the calendar had passed into June. While we didn’t get Part 3, we did recently get two previously unreleased, unmixed tracks this week. “Back To The Pad” and “Catch Me Out”, a collaboration with Lil’ Fat, popped up on Soundcloud, and both show the potential groundwork for what could have been “May Flowers Part 3”. It’s pretty well known that Sharrod Sloans has a good amount of work that might not see the light of day, but we’re glad that these two tracks made it to the surface. Check out both tracks below:

VIDEO: Emaad – “Cold Shouldeeer”

It’s becoming clear that Emaad is going to be one of the next big names coming out of the CCM camp, and while the hype is already beginning for him, he adds fuel to the fire with his latest video for “Cold Shouldeeer”. Produced by LeanBeatz, the track has the bounce and hook of a single, and will definitely have you singing along at some point. The clip is out of left field, complete with VHS tape fuzz, a weird 3D skeleton, and a cameo from CCM teammate IshDARR, amongst others. The track comes from Emaad’s “Destroy” EP, which came out earlier this summer. Check out the video for “Cold Shouldeeer” below:

Breaking And Entering’s Five To Watch Presented By JBL Professional – September 2017

As a Milwaukee-based music website, it is our obligation to not only bring Milwaukee to the world, but bring the world to Milwaukee, as well. Five To Watch submissions are handled exclusively through ReverbNation. Click here to submit music to be one of our Five To Watch Presented by JBL Professional.

As we move into fall, there’s no shortage of great music coming in to our Five To Watch Presented by JBL Professional inbox via Reverbnation. Over 3,000 submissions have come in so far, and we have the tough task of cutting that down to just five artists. Check out who made the cut as our Five To Watch presented by JBL Professional for September:

Munich (Leicester, England)

There’s something to be said for well crafted pop rock, and with one listen to Munich, you can tell that the band has a knack for writing a good song. Originally the project of vocalist Josh Walker and guitarist Ben McNicholas, the group has evolved to a quintet, and are actively recording their second album, due out at the end of the year. If the rest of the album is anything like their single, “Baby There’s No Time”, the group has the potential to make a name for themselves in their hometown and beyond:

Dada Doe (Atlanta, GA)

While you may have preexisting thoughts when you hear “hip hop artist from Atlanta”, Dada Doe is here to change all of that. With an old school sound and a personality that comes through in her delivery, she simply embodies the style of her music. With an album entitled “Road2Success” on the way, she’s picking up acclaim along the way, performing at a Grammy Music Showcase as well as receiving awards. When you hear her single, “Cheers”, you’ll be able to tap into her passion for hip hop in its truest form:

Inward of Eden (Knoxville, TN)

With a heavy influence from their southern roots, Knoxville, Tennessee natives Inward of Eden pack a punch with their music. There’s a tremendous amount of grit to the band’s style, and that plays out in their sound as well. The band recently released an EP entitled “Mind Control” , which demonstrates their ability to mix conventional rock music with southern flare. In any instance, Inward of Eden make music that is attractive to fans of multiple genres of music, and you can hear that in their sound alone:

Menage (Los Angeles, CA)

With dueling vocals and an intense back beat controlling their sound, LA based band Menage have their sites set elsewhere, with songwriting that is catchy and memorable as soon as you hear it. The eclectic music scene in Los Angeles plays an influence to their song, “Our Time Is Now”, and that results in a slightly more complex palette of sounds to work with going forward. Check out the single below and hear that sound on full display:

Syren City (Bristol, England)

It’s hard to argue against a shot of adrenaline and a song that hits you right out of the gate, and Bristol, England rockers have that down pat. The band bases their sound on some heavy, thick guitar parts that lead the way in emotional, all-or-nothing performance on their records. The band has already made some significant appearances at major festivals in England, and it’s likely that this is just the beginning of the ride for them. Check out “Our Desire” below:
