AUDIO: Alex Takton – “The St. Valentine’s Day Massacre”

Alex Takton has a new project out today, and he goes the anti-love route on “The St. Valentine’s Day Massacre.” Over 12 tracks featuring production from Godxilla, Takton brings some retro-infused raps with a commanding presence. Whether he’s talking about not lacking when it comes time to prove himself, or just kicking back with some weed and a PS5, he’s doing whatever he wants on this project, with the charisma on the mic to make it all work. Check out “The St. Valentine’s Day Massacre” below:

AUDIO: Godxilla – “God Mode”

Producer and rapper Godxilla put out a record for his 50th birthday, and he’s on another level when it comes to “God Mode.” If you’ve seen his battles at Big Beat MKE in the past, you know that he’s always nice with the 808s, but the beats here are ones that you can ride to, and Godxilla doesn’t have reservations when it comes to his verses. Whether he’s crooning about a relationship that doesn’t feel right (“I Don’t Think She Wants Me”) or warning people about falling for the wrong person (“You Bout To Catch A Case”,) Godxilla raps like a veteran with the spirit of a younger artist. Check out “God Mode” here below:

AUDIO: Alex Takton – “Live From Waukesha County Mental Health Unit B”

Alex Takton dropped an album this fall, and he linked up with producer Godxilla for “Live From Waukesha County Mental Health Unit B.” The ten-track project is dripping with retro influence, but the flow is on point from Takton, taking on a myriad of topics from track to track. There’s a uniqueness to the way that he approaches a song, staying on topic in a way that is actively rare in the current hip hop climate. The beats hit just right, and the verses keep you locked in, giving you something to get hooked on with each song. “Live From Waukesha County Mental Health Unit B” feels like it should be not only a physical CD, but one that gets scuffed and nicked in the car from regular play. Check it out below:

AUDIO: Godxilla – “Weapons Of Mass Production”

Producer and artist Godxilla recently dropped a new beat tape, “Weapons Of Mass Production,” that lives up to its name. With 12 tracks overall, and full length beats rather than shorter snippets, Godxilla gives the track space to breathe. It feels like 12 mini jam sessions featuring the veteran producer as a one man band, and he can achieve just about any sound your looking for. There’s bits of funk and trap interspersed here, with some synth and guitar solos that will have you on cloud nine. If you’ve heard Godxilla’s work before, you know what you’re in for, but check out the tape below:

B&E Weekly Jams Presented by Bublr Bikes: 12/21 – 12/27/21

As the year draws to a close and the holidays are on everyone’s mind, there’s still a healthy amount of music coming out of Milwaukee. This week’s B&E Weekly Jams presented by Bublr Bikes takes a look at new tracks being released that do not have a holiday theme, including new music from Wave Chapelle, Breonte, ILY Truly and more. Don’t forget that you can check out the archive of playlists by following Breaking And Entering on Spotify, and check out this week’s B&E Weekly Jams below:

AUDIO: Godxilla – “King of the Mountain”

Godxilla is back with a new project, and he’s standing tall on “King of the Mountain.” With 19 tracks of bold, strong production, he’s not afraid to command his respect on the microphone. There’s plenty of tough flows and big deliveries, but Godxilla is certainly an artist worthy of flexing like this with an extensive history in the game. Throughout his career, he continues to progress his sound and adapt to the style of the current day, while maintaining the flavor that has become his signature either behind the boards or on the microphone. “King Of The Mountain” is a good look, and you should check out the album here below:

AUDIO: Alex Takton – “Mequon’s Most Wanted, Vol. 2”

Alex Takton is back with a new installment of his “Mequon’s Most Wanted” series, and he’s focused on the fun aspects of hip hop with his new project. With production from Godxilla, and appearances from Baby Drew, Afroman and more, he’s got plenty of co-signs to solidify his status as an emcee. Takton is self-aware on this release, but still takes advantage of the production afforded to him to show off his skills on the microphone. There’s a bit of comedy, but the flow and delivery to back it up, and it makes for an entertaining project, which is the overall goal. Check out “Mequon’s Most Wanted, Vol. 2” below:

AUDIO: Godxilla – “3’Iller”

Veteran producer and artist Godxilla kicked off his 2021 in a big way with the release of his latest album, “3’Iller”. As you might expect from the fierce Big Beat MKE producer, the beats hit extra hard, but his years of being involved with music in all aspects of the game help on the mic as well. With the ability to combine different eras of hip hop on the microphone, “3’iller” features something that fans of multiple generations can appreciate. Godxilla never shows any signs of slowing down, and he definitely represents an essential element of local hip hop culture. Check out “3’Iller” below:

AUDIO: Alex Takton – “Mequon’s Most Wanted, Volume 1”

There’s an era of hip hop that consisted mainly of party jams and keeping things light, and while that got lost in translation, Alex Takton is bringing it back with his new album, “Mequon’s Most Wanted, Volume 1.” With producer Godxilla in the mix, amongst a host of features from Treva La Viva and JD The Chief, the album is meant to put a smile on your face. There’s a lot of big personalities that shine here, but it should be noted that Takton can also hold things down when it comes to his actual skill on the microphone. If you’re not trying to be too negative today, this might be the record to escape all that. Check out “Mequon’s Most Wanted, Volume 1” below:

Meccah Maloh Emerges Winner of Cream City Beat Battle Vol. 2

Cullen going up against Zachary.html.

The highly-anticipated Cream City Beat Battle Vol. 2 took place at Company Brewing Friday night and packed the place with friend and fans alike. The previous beat battle had been in March. Austin Mahnke came home from LA working with Atlantic Records to host while Mic Crawf emceed and DJay Mando played music.

Some of the most creative and innovative beat-smiths in our city competed. Vol. 1’s champion Godxilla as well as Spice God, Zachary.HTML, Scylla, Juan, Xan Beats, Meccah Maloh, Jsystematik, Duff Smith, Riicflairmadeit, Cullen, No B, Thatguyeli, Shogun Hua, Conwy, and Smitty all showcased what they do. CameOne, Mocha Cash, and Rowan (replaced by Twan Mack mid-competition) judged.

The competition brought fierce energy all night as rounds progressed, but eventually it squared down between Cullen and Meccah Maloh. Ultimately, Meccah Maloh prevailed.

“The energy was incredible,” Maloh said post-battle. “The crowd really enjoyed the performance and that’s what it’s really about. If you wow the crowd, you wow the judges.”

Maloh describes the intensity he felt as he went head-to-head against Godxilla in the first round.

“I was worried about him. The first beat I played the sound wasn’t really there and we had technical difficulties, but the second beat I played the crowd really showed me a lot of love. From there I kind of knew what everybody else was doing and felt like I had a shot. I’m very confident in my beat selection and what I’ve made. I was honestly really concerned because Godxilla got into it last minute – the person I was supposed to be going against in the first round backed out and got replaced with Godxilla. For me to go against a Milwaukee legend like that is crazy, and for me to advance to the second round is amazing. I got so much respect for Godxilla. He’s a champion – like he’s won many battles across the country, so for me to knock him out was shocking.”

In a heartfelt moment after winning, Meccah Maloh said he was given a beat pad by his friend Demaryl Howard after getting released from the county jail this past December.

“The plan was to make beats for my album, since I’ve been making beats. When I got out I was looking at videos and I’ve been hip to Trizzy Track, BeatsbyJblack, Lisa Vasquez…I was like “damn, let me try doing that too.” I tried my hand at pad drumming and it was easy for me to make that transition because I’ve been playing drums since I was five years old. My main thing with the beat battles is really to give you a performance, and I think that’s what adds to the whole thing. Every single battle I’ve been in, me and whoever has the machine make it to the final round.”

Now that he emerged victorious, Meccah Maloh talks about what’s next.

“Now it’s about placements – I’m trying to take a page out of CameOne’s book with production placements…possibly more battles too but for now I’m trying to relax. October was crazy – I’m gonna spend time with my family and my girl and take a breather. I think my next battle is in St. Louis with Fresh Produce. I’ve also got an album coming out – I got a single called “Protest” out soon too. I got some jewels and gems for the people over my own beats, so now I’m buckling down and focusing on my music.”

Thank you to everyone that competed, came out, and helped put everything together – we look forward to the next installment!

The footage you’ve been waiting for is here! Night two of the Big Beat MKE 2019 Quarterfinals was indeed one that should be talked about for some time. Don’t forget to join us tomorrow night for the semifinals, and you can watch the battles here below:

RECAP: Big Beat MKE 2019 – Quarterfinals Night Two

Leading up to last night’s beat battles in the quarterfinals of Big Beat MKE, there was an electricity throughout Jackalope Lounj unlike any other. With 40 Mil vs. Godxilla and Spice God vs. Beat Council on the card, an epic night was in store, and the producers did not disappoint. In addition to that, it was Vogel Park’s turn to takeover the night, with performances from Camb and AWillThaGreat that kept the crowd moving as well. Jackalope Lounj was packed from the stage to the back door, and everyone went home buzzing from the night.

Camb

The first battle of the night proved to be an instant classic, as Da Monsta (40 Mil) and Godxilla went toe-to-toe in a true clash of the beat battle titans. Prior to the battle itself, both had taken friendly shots at one another on social media, which Godxilla explained had spilled over from trash-talking texts between the competitors beforehand. That energy translated into an incredible battle, with some of the hardest beats Big Beat MKE has seen yet. Godxilla flipped South Park’s “Salty Chocolate Balls” into a diss beat, and 40 responded with an insane track that featuring a vocal sample that the reign of Godxilla had ended. Both producers gave it their best effort, and there was no way this wasn’t going to overtime from the start. In a narrow decision from the judges, 40 Mil won the first round of what we hope will become an epic beat battle rivalry to go to the semifinals.

AWillThaGreat

With all of the hype around the first battle, there were a couple of absolute killers in the second contest, as well, as Spice God went up against the collective known as Beat Council. The crowd was still very much alive, and were boisterous throughout the battle. Beat Council pushed the Jackalope Lounj speakers seemingly to their brink, but Spice God countered with lots of bass, varying tempos, and a calm demeanor on stage while handling business. With the energy in the room already high, there were calls for a fourth round before the end of regulation, and Spice God broke out a customized Tune Squad jersey for the crowd before dropping his last beat to get just a few extra cheers. Ultimately, Spice God ended up taking the win in what turned out to be an equally exciting battle as its hyped up predecessor.

There was showmanship, clever disses, a loud, lively crowd, and plenty of insane production on night six of Big Beat MKE. This was everything you could have ever asked for from a beat battle and more. Don’t miss next week, as Fearjoy faces James Ashen, and Da Monsta (40 Mil) will do battle with Spice God. In addition to that, we’ll have performances from Mudy and J-Lamo. Your updated bracket is below:

VIDEO: Big Beat MKE 2019 – Opening Round Night Three Battles

Big Beat MKE: Opening Round Night Three Recap

Sha

It was a beautiful, warm night in the Third Ward, and the crowd at Jackalope Lounj only heated things up on Thursday, as the third night of the opening round of Big Beat MKE absolutely went off. A lively crowd packed into the room early, and by the time the first battle of the evening was ready to start, things were at a fever pitch. Hiii Tribe artist King Myles and Appleton artist Sha were also in the building to rock in between battles. Nobody had any idea of what was really about to go down.

The opening contest of the night was no joke, as Cuban Lynx and Cream City Beat Battle winner Godxilla took the stage. Both producers brought the bass, which rattled the stage and reverberated throughout the bar. Cuban Lynx had a smooth style about his tracks, and Godxilla brought the flare, switching up his sound in the middle of his one-minute rounds. That flare may have been the edge, as ultimately he moved on to the quarterfinals after a battle that required overtime, as requested by the crowd.

King Myles

The second battle of the night saw another veteran go up against a worthy opponent, as former Miltown Beatdown competitor 40 Mil went toe-to-toe with Tuan G. This very well may have been the toughest battle of the whole tournament so far, as neither one was holding back when it was their turn to drop a track. In fact, the level of competition was so high that our host, Twan Mack, made the OG call for overtime, which the crowd loudly agreed to. While the decision was close, 40 Mil is moving on to the quarterfinals as well.

A pair of veterans came in and handled business on the third night of the opening round, but we still have two more battles to fill out the rest of the quarterfinal bracket. Join us next week as Spice God faces Mystik Musik, and Spacecrime goes up against Beat Council in the final night of the opening round, plus performances from Joshua Jenkins and G-Gifted. See you at Jackalope Lounj! Your updated bracket is below:

Godxilla wins Cream City Beat Battle

Company Brewing hosted the first ever Cream City Beat Battle Saturday night, garnering a massive turnout. Producer Main.Key curated it, with Mic Crawf as the MC and Moses playing the music.

The bracket-style competition had sixteen producers pitted against each other one-on-one, with four rounds total. Each battle consisted of two one-minute rounds with producers alternating turns. A panel of five judges then decided on the winner based on originality, quality, and crowd reaction.

Arrogant, Ave4, Cade Zube, Datraj, Dev Diamond, DSHN, Godxilla, James Ashen, KD, Richy Slims, Scylla, Shogun Hua, Spice God, Systematik, Triv, and Wabi all competed. After a fierce but fun night of showcase, the final round came down to Godxilla against Spice God. Godxilla ultimately prevailed.

His prize includes two hours of studio time at Hi-Five, two weeks of Fuelgood meal prep, mixing headphones from Koss, and clothing from Cream City Phresh, all of which sponsored the event.

Godxilla is Christopher Taylor. A Milwaukee native, he has been making music for thirty-two years. He turns forty-six this year.

“People came here to hear producers,” Taylor said. “It was a house full of people that came here to hear people that actually are in control of the sound. All the emcees look for people like us to help bring their ideas to life but rarely do we get celebrated. So tonight is a celebration.”

Taylor is a certified Pro Tools expert, taught recording Madison Media Institute, and is studio manager of the Running Rebels Community Organization. Additionally he plays ten instruments, including trumpet, sousaphone, piano, drums, and bass – the last of which he played himself on his beats. His independent label has released over ten albums and he has worked with the likes of Big Mike (whom he is currently working on an album with), Bushwick Bill, Coo Coo Cal, Young Bleed, Bizzy Bone, and many more.

“This is the first time I actually prepared for a battle,” Taylor laughed. “I was terrified tonight. I was the 2007 Chicago champion, but now I’m a 2019 Milwaukee champion.”

“Every time I brought up who was in the battle, people that have been around in the scene when I mentioned Godxilla would get so hyped,” Mahnke said. “His submission was insane.”

Mahnke had been mesmerized by the night’s success. He received thirty-six submissions for the event and found it incredibly challenging to narrow it down.

“It was like an eight hour process,” Mahnke said. “We assigned numbers to everybody’s submission so there was no bias. It took way longer than I thought it would. I figured we’d listen and know right away…no. We had to listen to people multiple times and there’s people I wish I could’ve had in it.”

Mic Crawf got involved from being suggested by Moses to Mahnke.

“Being able to control the energy is rewarding,” Crawf said on being the MC. “When everyone’s on one accord they’re just in your hands, man.”

Judges included WebsterX, Joey Dadass, and Reggie Bonds.

“I named it Volume 1 because I knew there would be a Volume 2,” Mahnke said on what happens next.”In bigger Midwest markets like Minneapolis and Chicago, you could pull up to an event like this once a month. It’s a void that needs to be filled. What happens next was totally dependent on tonight. I’m speechless about tonight, honestly.”

Mahnke went on to enjoy his beer. He well earned it.

AUDIO: Frugal Stu & The Coupons – “Discount!”

As far as band names go, Frugal Stu & The Coupons is a winner. With that, the band kept that theme going for their debut EP, “Discount!”, a three-song offering that is all over the place musically, in the best way possible. The band has some help from the local hip hop scene, as well, as this project was recorded, mixed, and mastered by Moses and Godxilla, two names that you wouldn’t normally expect to have associated with an experimental fusion record. The tracks come off as extended jams, from the quirky “Your Song Is Great”, to the eight minute exodus that is “Bogo”. A wide variety of technical instrumentation is on display on this record, and while the band’s image may be a little out of left field, their skills not to be taken lightly. Check out “Discount!” below:

VIDEO: Godxilla – “Stick To What You Good At”

Fresh off of the release of “Music Is Medicine II”, Godxilla is back with a new video, which dropped over the weekend. “Stick To What You Good At” is a track about, well, just that; not trying to be someone that you aren’t. It’s a different flow from Godxilla, with him altering his delivery within the verses to get just a little quicker with his bars than most. The video takes the song literally, with the veteran Milwaukee artist giving out his advice to the youth, along with some cameos from hip hop heads, including Kareem City’s Twan Mack. It’s a different feel than we get from most Milwaukee hip hop, and there’s a good message underlying it all, too. Check out the video for “Stick To What You Good At” below:

VIDEO: Godxilla – “We Got Old But We’re Still Good”

It’s not as often these days that something on the internet will put a smile on your face, but that’s definitely the case with Godxilla’s new video, “We Got Old But We’re Still Good”. If you don’t know the name Godxilla, you’re about to check out a video from a Milwaukee music veteran, who had his first recording sessions in the 80’s. Since 1999, he’s worked as the head of his own label, Ton Of Soul Records, and expanded his skill set to become the Lead Recording Instructor at Madison Media Institute. Godxilla recently released his new project, “Music Is Medicine II”, and you can check out the way too fun video for the first single below. We’ve already seen that “Music Is Medicine III” is in production, so get ready for a lot more music from the Ton Of Soul camp. Check out the video below:
