AUDIO: The Up & Up – Freezing Cold

The Up & Up’s classic pop-punk sound is not to be outdone by their powerful underlying messages. Hailing from Madison, WI, the group uses their platform to tackle very human topics not usually found in this genre. Their latest single, ‘Freezing Cold’, touches on the icy feeling of being left behind by those who you thought you could trust.

REVIEW: Parquet Courts at Summerfest

Festival shows can be challenging. There are so many outliers that can affect sound and quality, but for Parquet Courts I don’t feel like their sound being off was the only issue that happened on Saturday last night. I have heard these issues at many Summerfest shows throughout the years and it’s always a bit disappointing when you see a band with as much energy as Parquet Courts fall flat due to shotty sound.

I don’t want to throw the sound guy under the bus as I feel like the whole show was disjointed. Something that I would expect is ironed out after close to 13 years of playing together. It was not the music that felt off but the whole tone of the show. I’d say the first 2/3rds of the show were a mix of their slower and some of the faster stuff, but the way they went from song to song felt jarring and not a cohesive blend of what their studio albums have.

That’s not to say there weren’t moments of pure rock that stood out to me above the rest. The meger 7:30pm crowd for the most part seemed to be engaged for a group of people there to see Death Cab For Cutie, with much of the crowd standing the entirety of the show. There were some crowd inclusion singing with the band on tracks like Total Football and Watching Strangers Smile.

Like I mentioned the first 2/3rds of the show felt off, but the last 1/3rd of the show stood out as to what I really thought the entirety of the show would consist of. Balls to the wall rock music that didn’t let up. It was such a large tonal shift almost as the band woke up from a nap. This last 1/3rd of the show was what I was waiting for. The band all of a sudden was synced perfectly the front man Andrew Savage wailed on his guitar like it owed him money and screamed vocals that made me almost worry that he was in pain, but in the best way. It was raw, it was loud, it was passionate, it was the band I was there to see.

I’m not sure what the tonal shift was but It was palpable to have that kind of switch. The crowd seemed to act accordingly with this change as well. More hands went in the air, I could hear more people singing and people were moving instead of standing. Parquet Courts must have sensed this as well as they played with such fury and excitement to cap out the show. I wish that was how the entire show was but what I got is what I’ll take. I wish I saw them at Turner Hall when they came a few months back because I feel like that show would’ve had the energy I was craving so badly. That being said, for a pre-headliner opener show at Summerfest I’m glad I saw what I saw. I’d like to see more in the future because I got a sampler platter of what I thought a live Parquet Courts show would be.

Marz Landing Brings A New Style Of Punk Rock To The Table With Their Debut Single ‘Rockstars Of Tomorrow’

Marz Landing is a Punk Pop/Rock band located in Nashville, TN. The band was formed by 22 year old, Luan Seguim, and 21 year old, Isaac Minddendorf. They have a very bright and forward sound with theatrical elements such as chants, transitions and even effects. They try to make their songs unique and different; their band’s name is something out of this world, and they want their music to be like that too.

Hailing from Indianapolis, IN, Luan Segium has a rich background in musical theatre and classical vocal training. He is the frontman of Marz Landing. Bringing his style and influences into their music gives it a bright and punchy sound. He is commonly compared to Panic! At The Disco, KennyHoopla and U2.

Isaac Minddendorf, the main producer and lead guitarist of the band, hails from his home town of Nashville, TN. Growing up in Nashville taught Isaac to break boundaries and revive his true passion for punk music. Some of Isaac’s inspirations include The Ramones, Sex Pistols and Blink 182 to name a few.

Austin Mondlock is a new member and is the bassist of Marz Landing. Overall, the band considers their sound to retro punk rock with a twist of modern infusion. Brining us classic riffs with new vocal and structural approaches, giving them a fresh and new punk sound, with theatrical elements. For fans of the punk genre, Marz Landing would be a considerable alternative to the new punk era.

Rockstars Of Tomorrow” is the band’s debut single. It is a new way to look at punk music and pay homage to its history. The creative verses highlight bands like Blink 182, Kiss, Queen and Elton John, and they also poke at the mainstream rap music industry of today. The second verse discusses the emotional connection to the art a band creates: a song.

In regards to the meaning on the song Luan said: “Today’s music is being written about what it is to be a Rockstar. Rappers are not Rockstars! They only highlight the stupid little things like money, sex, and fame. They forget the poise and symbol that a true star embodies; they forget the music.”

But their debut release is also so much more than that. It tells a story in a distinct style, showing their individuality from mainstream music and from punk music as a whole. It’s creative and unique, and an overall enjoyable experience to listen to. It gives people a new sound and new message, a way to feel happy listening to music again if they’re sick of the repetitive music and subliminal messages. It’s a must listen for fans of Panic at The Disco!, Blink 182, Greenday or KeenyHoopla.

The songwriting process was a team effort. Isaac made the instrumental, and Luan wrote the lyrics with the help of his girlfriend, and the team’s Creative Director Anyssa Camacho. Austin added even more to it structurally. It was a fast process even though they went through several mixes stages and even some re-recording stages. They were satisfied with what they got at the end and even more proud that they fully produced it themselves.

They would love to collaborate with not just some of their idols like New York Dolls, ACDC, Elton John, and My Chemical Romance, but also with other smaller artists to pave a new path for independent music. The band loves performing, be it in a bar, theater or coffee shop. The beauty of music is that you can play it anywhere. But, they want to perform on main stages in their home towns though.

Marz Landing believes that they need to adapt to change, and be a part of change. Social media is one such change in the music industry, it can change a group’s look, name ane image for better or for worse. They hope to do it for the better, so they use their social media to just spread the love. If anyone feels lost, they’re here to uplift them and increase confidence levels among their fans.

They would like to tell their fans to prepare for the madness and the new culture of music that they are going to bring to the table. ‘Rockstars Of Tomorrow’ is the opener and lead single to their debut project EP called “Marz Landing”. It is a tribute to their roots and they plan to create a cinematic universe through their videos and shows. The project tells the story of a group of isolated teens in a complex universe. So stay tuned!

AUDIO: Forced Impact – “Promo 2018”

You might not know this, but there is a thriving DIY hardcore and punk scene full of young bands making a name for themselves in Milwaukee. One such outfit is straightedge band Forced Impact, who fell onto many people’s radars with their 2017 release, “Conflict Theory”. The Milwaukee band is back with new music, as last weekend, they released two new songs on a new label, Sob Story Records. “Step Aside” is a grinding, brutal song, where as its compliment, “I Wanna Know” picks up the pace before mellowing out. The pair of tracks are out now on tape, Sob Story’s first physical release, which you can check out here. Listen to the “Promo 2018” tape below:

VIDEO: Direct Hit! – “Different Universe”

Breakout Milwaukee punks Direct Hit! have a knack for creating compelling videos, and their latest release, “Different Universe” arrives just in time for horror movie season. The track is the third single from the band’s new album, “Crown Of Nothing”, due in less than a week on Fat Wreck Chords. This time, the band team’s up with directors Adam Santiago and Derek Shreves of Split 94 Media to create a trailer for the new album, which plays like your favorite thriller movie of the year. The song itself is also telling of a much more mature, but just as catchy version of Direct Hit! on the new record, which is a step that will be exciting to see from the band. It all comes together well, and the song will likely be a standout when “Crown Of Nothing” is released. Check out “Different Universe” below:

INTERVIEW: VANT

It’s not often that a band’s second show in a country is at a major music festival, but that’s exactly the case for British punks VANT. The band will be playing Lollapalooza on the Grant Park Stage Sunday at 12:45, following their only other US appearance, which was the New York Governor’s Ball festival. The band have made noise in their home country, however, including main stage appearances at the Reading and Leeds festivals. We talk with frontman Mattie Vant about the band, and their second appearance stateside:

B&E:  Introduce yourselves! Who are you?

MV: I am what I am and I ain’t what I ain’t.

B&E: Your latest album, “Dumb Blood” contains a whopping 22 tracks. Was anything left off of the album?

MV: Yeah, if you grab a copy of the Japanese Import you can hear the rest.

B&E: Lollapalooza is only your second US show. What should people expect from the band’s live show?

MV: Energy, lipstick and lawn mowers.

B&E: You’ve played the UK with some big bands, however. Who was your favorite band to play a show with?

MV: Blossoms. Such great guys.

B&E: Are there any plans for a US tour in the works yet?

MV: I hope so. You guys baffle me. I want to see all corners of bafflement.

B&E: Finally, We always love a good tour story. What’s the craziest thing that’s happened to you on tour?

MV: I once met James Murphy and got invited into his dressing room with the rest of LCD Soundsystem. He gave me some nice wine from his backstage cellar, told me about Bowie and hypothetically agreed to make my 5th record.

AUDIO: Juiceboxxx – “Freaked Out American Loser”

Kids, we’re a long way from the Thunder Zone. Today we have a new album from perennial underground favorite Juiceboxxx, entitled “Freaked Out American Loser”. If there was ever such a thing as “punk rap”, and there probably is, this album falls under that category. From Juiceboxxx’s overall demeanor, to literal punk songs like “Destruction and Redemption” and “No Good Way To Grow Up” it feels very, well, punk, but that’s also how Juiceboxxx earned his reputation. There’s also the overarching theme of realizing that there’s a shelf life to the act that the Milwaukee emcee developed in the mid-2000s. That being said, nobody is getting sick of the music being created by the guy that developed his own sound, label, energy drink, and various other entities for himself any time soon. Overall, “Freaked Out American Loser” is uniquely the sound that only Juice could create, living somewhere in the awkward space between punk and hip hop, but maintaining the ethos that we’ve come to know and love. Check out the album below:

RECAP: 2017 Vans Warped Tour: Milwaukee

Every year, the Vans Warped Tour rolls through Milwaukee at the Marcus Amphitheater forecourt, bringing dozens of bands across several stages for a traveling festival unlike any other. A Monday stop in Milwaukee didn’t seem to damper a sizeable crowd of all ages coming out to check out multiple generations of punk, or should we say punk-inspired music. In fairness, that’s the best way to describe the makeup of the tour’s lineup now; while there are some acts that are truly punk bands, it’s more of a counter-cultural tour of sorts now. In many ways, it’s the internet IRL, complete with bands that have cultivated immense followings online. Here’s our tour through the day:

Things kicked off with a shot of adrenaline, when Valient Thorr took the Hard Rock Live stage. The band has been relentlessly crushing stages for years, including several stints on the Warped Tour, and that veteran expertise was on display. Always finding ways to get the crowd involved, frontman Valient Himself made the first of what would be many band-in-the-crowd moments when he led those around him in a sitting, rowing exercise-like pit. Also during this show, something flooded the first few rows of standing area at the BMO Harris Pavilion, making for an interesting scene as punks splashed around in who-knows-what type of standing water mid-circle pit.

Some of the younger bands on tour really made an impact, however, as they need to when pushed into a bill with close to 63 other options to watch at some point throughout the day. It’s clear that both emo outfit Boston Manor and ska newcomers Stacked Like Pancakes are doing something special, though, as both attracted hoards of fans to their set. Both made the most of their time on stage, with the latter band not only trolling the crowd with the opening bars of Smash Mouth’s “All Star” (we see you, internet), but also standing on fans hands on the Skullcandy stage. Someone responded by throwing cooked pancakes on stage, which, frankly, takes a lot of commitment, causing the band members to dare each other to eat one.

There was a space, though, for dare we say it, actual punk rock. Legendary punk rock, at that, as The Adolescents and TSOL proved that they could not only hang with the younger dudes, but in some cases, upstage them completely. The Adolescents sounded like they were still in their prime, and even through out a Die Kreutzen reference, which went appreciated by the Milwaukee crowd. Anti-Flag also proved to be one of the most actually punk bands of the current generation, with an energetic set full of politically charged songs covering topics like the current state of the government and police brutality. Punk rock wasn’t dead on the Warped Tour this year by any means.

There were plenty of singalongs throughout the day, as bands who had previously strayed from the Warped Tour came back for this year. One of note were The Ataris, who kicked off their half hour with breakout hit “In This Diary”, and brought out some of their older material for fans that grew up with the band. This would be a theme for the day, with Hawthorne Heights and CKY also delivering sets of fan-favorites rather than pushing new music. Hawthorne Heights frontman JT Woodruff mentioned that they wanted to make their set “as fun as possible for you”, and only included one track from their newest EP (which is really good, by the way), “Hurt”.

When you think about what creates a great Warped Tour, though, it’s really a collection of cool moments here and there that stick with you. Other fun moments from this year’s Milwaukee stop included everything from Save Ferris frontwoman Monique Powell teasing security guards inside the Marcus Amphitheater, to GWAR bringing out their Bile-Driver that spewed blue goop on the crowd. However, one of the coolest moments was one of the closing acts of the night, New York hardcore legends Sick Of It All, playing the Hard Rock Live stage. While more contemporary acts Beartooth and I Prevail technically headlined the show, Sick Of It All put on a fun, fast-paced hardcore set spanning some of their earliest material, to a smaller crowd. However, members of the other Warped Tour bands that played earlier in the day came out to the mosh pit to check out the show from the audience point of view, and had just as much, if not more, fun than the festival attendees. Truly a fun moment if you were watching it all go down.

While there’s a lot that could be said about the current state of the Warped Tour, it’s best to just leave it up to the festival attendee. With the makeup of the stages and the massive amount of talent on the bill every day, there’s multiple avenues that fans could take for the day. While Kevin Lyman and crew do a great job of trying to achieve something for everyone every year, this year felt like it had the most diversity in recent memory. The Warped Tour continues to change and evolve, and every year is unique. Given the current state of music in general, there’s something to be said for that. The Warped Tour is designed to create the most entertaining day possible for their fans every year, and Monday afternoon in Milwaukee was no different.

Second Wave of 2017 Riot Fest Lineup Announced

The second wave of the Riot Fest lineup is here, and even more bands have been added to an already impressive list, set to take over Chicago’s Douglas Park from September 15th-17th. At-The Drive In, Best Coast, The Casualties and Mad Caddies are among the notable names on the second round of announcements, making the festival even more of a priority on many fans’ summer festival checklists. Check out the full lineup below:

AUDIO: Detenzione – “Vol. 1”

Milwaukee hardcore band Detenzione landed on our radar recently, and if you’re a fan of old school punk and thrash, this is the release that you’ve wanted to come around for a long time. “Vol. 1” was recorded literally eleven days ago in a basement of house show venue Ground Zero, and released earlier this week. Everything about this band is fast, and in under eight minutes, the band can not only crank out six songs (closing track “Lurkers” is a real marathon, clocking in at 1:40 total), but they’ll also win over your affection. The tones and general reckless abandonment in their songs will make any skate punk smile, just for a little bit. Check out “Vol. 1” below:

AUDIO: Twos – “Twos”

If you’re a fan of (or grew up on) pop punk, there are diamonds in the rough all over for you to find in the slew of music that is the internet. For instance, a quick peruse of Bandcamp led us to the debut EP from Racine natives Twos, which is for sure a pop punk diamond in the rough. With six tracks of vintage emo bliss, Twos feel like your newly-discovered best kept secret on your first listen. With tight guitar parts and well written melodies, the band draws upon the best parts of the records certain people (cough cough) grew up on, creating songs you’ll want to hear over and over again. Get ready to discover the soundtrack to your day with Twos’ self-titled debut:

VIDEO: The Pukes – “Do What Diddy”

The Pukes have seen their share of success in 2016, and they’ve parlayed that into 2017, with the release of their new video for “Do What Diddy”. The opening track to their local breakout release, “Revenge of the Pukes”, is reminiscent of early Ramones records; brash, catchy as hell, and fast. If you strip away the aggressive guitars, the songs on those records are really bubblegum pop tracks with skewed subject matter. The same properties apply to The Pukes. The single is fun, upbeat music, glazed over with a healthy amount of distortion, and “Do What Diddy” is born. The stop-motion video literally embodies that motif, with it’s fair share of Converse high tops and actual bubble gum. “Do What Diddy” will be stuck in your head all day, but you should definitely check it out, and you can do so with the video below:

AUDIO: Seven Costanza – “Majority Pork”

The band known as Seven Costanza is no more. In fact, their last show was several months ago. However, all is not lost, and it’s definitely not time to pout about the band calling it a day. We have a final album from the band, titled “Majority Pork”, and it might just be their best work. The band recorded the album at Treehouse Studios in Chicago, and you can hear that they put everything they’ve got into this one.  The band will be missed, for sure, but this is one hell of a send off. Check out the album below:

VIDEO: Darko – “Hiraeth”

If you like your punk rock with a touch of some technical dueling guitars, the new single and video from UK skate punks Darko are just what you need. “Hiraeth” is the world’s first listen to anything from their upcoming debut full-length, “Bonsai Mammoth”, due out on February 3rd through Bird Attack/Lockjaw/Touch Of Hope Records. If there was ever a soundtrack to tearing a room apart, this would probably be it. The high-speed punk song with a touch of vintage metal is a great way to kick start your day, and Darko are here to do just that. Check out the video below, and expect more from the band in anticipation of their debut:

AUDIO: Bad Mongos – “Shoot The Bullet”

Spanish punks Bad Mongos hadn’t really made a name for themselves in the United States with their initial run near the dawn of the millennium, but after a twelve-year hiatus, the group is out to make noise with their new album, “Shoot The Bullet”. The band has reformed, and their new release is thirteen tracks of in your face, straight up rock and roll. Citing influences from The Ramones to Turbonegro, and everywhere else in between, the album feels incredibly punk from the moment you press play. “Shoot The Bullet” is currently available via Spanish label BCore Disc, or you can stream the entire project below:

AUDIO: Guttermouth – “The Human Mulligan”

After a 10 year break in between releases, Guttermouth returned this past July with their “Got It Made” EP. To continue this resurgence, the band also has an album coming out this Friday, entitled “New Car Smell”, and we have the first single in advance of the record’s release. “The Human Mulligan” is every bit as fast and aggressive as the Guttermouth of old, and punks of all ages can rejoice that this band is back. The song deals with aging, and realizing that a mulligan could be in order from time to time. “New Car Smell” is out Friday via Rude/Bird Attack Records, but you can stream “The Human Mulligan” below:

VIDEO: PWR BTTM – “I Wanna Boi”

Regardless of sexual orientation, PWR BTTM’s latest single “I Wanna Boi” is a well-crafted, catchy pop tune with a punk rock edge to it. The band is currently in the studio working on their second album, to be released by Polyvinyl Records in 2017, but still made time to release the video for this track. Filmed by Anneliese Cooper, the concept of the video is about the lonely feeling that comes from falling asleep alone, wishing for someone to be with. “I Wanna Boi” is the first single from the new album, but there is plenty more on the way, as both the album and a North American tour are in the works. Get your first glimpse of PWR BTTM below, with the visuals for “I Wanna Boi” here:

VIDEO: The Coathangers – “Perfume”

The summer may be fleeting, but Atlanta trio The Coathangers are holding onto every last drop of sunshine and carefree fun that they can. “Perfume”, the band’s new single, is straight up, no-frills, fun punk music with a little bit of a pop inspiration. There’s tremendous potential for crossover success, with the combination of a catchy hook and just the right amount of punk edge to hit the radio airwaves. The Matt Odom-directed video for the song is also very summer-jam friendly, featuring everything that makes you want to forget we’re already into football season, holiday sales, and the dreaded Pumpkin Spice Latte. “Perfume” comes from “Nosebleed Weekend”, currently out on Suicide Squeeze Records. Check out the video below, and let’s pretend the calendar doesn’t say September for another four minutes.

Max  & The Invaders have a been a staple of Milwaukee music, as the city’s premiere ska group. While the lineup of the band has changed several times over, the quality of the band’s live performances have not faltered since their inception decades ago. The band recently kicked off the 2016 Ayre In The Square concert series at Catalano Square in the Historic Third Ward, and the footage is below. Check out the video from “International Radio”:
