ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: Indonesian Junk

An exciting night of rock and roll occurred at Bremen Cafe on Friday night featuring Milwaukee bands Floor Model and Indonesian Junk plus Lansing, MI-based band The Stick Arounds.

Indonesian Junk consists of vocalist/guitarist Daniel James, guitarist Adam Turetzky, bassist Johnny Cyanide, and drummer Mike Mattner. Bringing the power pop and glam rock popularized in the late 70’s and early 80’s but with refreshing style, the band’s name is a Cheap Trick reference. James explains how the project formed.

“Well, I’ve been writing songs for a long time since before the band started. I was playing in other bands but I wasn’t a songwriter in them so my songs were on the backburner until I could do something with them. Eventually I realized it was hard to start a band; I taught myself how to play drums, made a demo, and then right around then I started playing with Johnny and a different drummer…that was in 2014 I think. We started playing out, put out a lot of records, and went on tour as soon as we got our first 7″ out. Yesterday was actually Mike Mattner’s five-year anniversary in the band on drums. Adam joined on guitar last year.”

Earlier this year in March the band released the record “Living in A Nightmare.”

“I don’t want to call it a pandemic album because I don’t really sing about the pandemic, but it’s obviously influenced by the early months of it where I was sitting at home bored with nothing to do. I think they’re our poppiest songs. I was playing a lot of acoustic guitar in my room; I feel like that’s what everyone in the country did in the months of March and April (laughs). It came together really quick songs-wise. This is the first album we ever did where I didn’t have a backlog of songs, because if you remember I started writing songs years before we started, but this whole album was written pretty much in a two-week period of time. It’s an album that encapsulates where we were in that moment of time. The other albums kind of bleed into each other – and I mean we’re still the same band – but it’s really cool to make an album that’s just us, now.”

James shares a bit of what the band’s up to.

“We haven’t really been writing anything; our main thing has been trying to find a practice space, so we can’t really work on new material if we don’t have anywhere to play loudly (laughs). We’re trying to play as many shows as we can with all the limitations that are out there. We’re not touring this year but I think we’ll tour next year. I started playing in my old band Chinese Telephones again and I started making comic books too; we’re all very active right now but I think it might be at least a year before we make another record, which is weird because we’ve always been cranking out records. Now that we can play live again, that’s gonna be our main focus, especially because we have two vinyl LPs that came out during the pandemic and we need to sell those (laughs).”

Indonesian Junk play X-Ray Arcade on October 10th, as well as some out-of-town gigs yet to be announced.

VIDEO: Mr. Nice Guy with Daniel James

Our Music Director, Ben Slowey, is more than on top of the local music scene. In addition to his work for Breaking And Entering, he also hosts the Mr. Nice Guy podcast, an interview-based show that reaches out to Milwaukeeans for conversations about what motivates them. Many of these shows fittingly involve the local music scene, and we’ll be sharing some of them here as well.

Today, Ben talks to Daniel James, who is frontman of glam punk band Indonesian Junk. Their latest record “Living in a Nightmare” came out in March. They discussed Daniel’s inception into the Milwaukee music scene in the early 2000s, Indonesian Junk’s founding, making their new record work during quarantine, the singles compilation they dropped last summer, and writing songs about how scared we all are right now. You can check out more episodes of Mr. Nice Guy on YouTube, and check out this interview below:

AUDIO: Indonesian Junk – “Living in a Nightmare”

Glam punks Indonesian Junk have their new record out on Rum Bar Records to say “fuck this past year.” Written and recorded entirely during quarantine, the band rocks with bottled-up vigor powerful enough to mentally put you front row for them with each song. Confronting social issues on some tunes while fanning the flames of love on others, Daniel James’ hooks are infectious and dynamic, concluding with the nine-minute mammoth “Bawlin’ My Eyes Out.” The bad boys in leather will hopefully get to play some shows in the near future, bringing these jams to life. Indonesian Junk are not a band to overlook in Milwaukee rock.

AUDIO: Indonesian Junk – “Policeman”

Glam punks Indonesian Junk channel their rage about police in their new single. They released it out of frustration with the recent verdict with the cop that attempted to murder Jacob Blake in Kenosha. With a catchy hook condemning the boys in blue, the song swells into a power pop gem that echoes an animosity that many are feeling right now. We look forward to the next Indonesian Junk record, which this song will be on.

AUDIO: Indonesian Junk – “Type of a Girl”

Glam punks Indonesian Junk have a new single out; it’s about being broken-hearted and not knowing what the hell to do but cry. Out on Rum Bar Records it’s the band’s first original in over a year and is their first release with new guitarist Adam Turetzky. The song brings their signature ’80s power pop with vocalist Daniel James’ bright yet lovelorn hooks and a killer guitar solo. We look forward to more from Indonesian Junk in the months to come.

VIDEO: Indonesian Junk – “City Lights”

Glam punk band Indonesian Junk are out with a new video for their song “City Lights” off their terrific record “Spiderbites” from last year. The song is about the loneliness that comes with being a new face in a new city, and the video makes creative use of a notebook to make the band look as if they are a drawing come to life. The titular “city lights” are representative of feeling like you are under a spotlight, with all eyes on you – a familiar feeling for anyone that feels like they’ve been on the outside looking inward. It’s great to hear from the rockers again – they’ve got a singles and rarities compilation coming out in just two weeks. Stay tuned!

AUDIO: Indonesian Junk – “Spiderbites”

Local power pop act Indonesian Junk is back with their much anticipated third full length album, “Spiderbites”, and it’s a master class in how to write a catchy rock song. With singles like “When I Find You” and “City Lights”, the band has built up some anticipation for this project, and the full body of work feels like any song on it could realistically be a radio-friendly single, with a mix of glam, punk, and even tinges of rockabilly at times. The band is truly in a lane of their own within the local scene, and that makes the sound of the album that much different within that context. Indonesian Junk are gearing up to go on tour to support the new album, but you can catch a record release show at Circle A on Saturday night, and check out the album below:

AUDIO: Indonesian Junk – “City Lights”

Invoking everything from punk to glam rock, Indonesian Junk has a sound and feel within Milwaukee that is uniquely their own. That’s reflected on their new single, “City Lights”, a hazy, uptempo rocker about being alone on the streets. The track definitely feels like it could fall in line on a New York Dolls album and be perfectly in place, which is a testament to the band’s songwriting and performance. With an upcoming album, “Spiderbites” due out via Rum Bar Records on September 28th, the band are gearing up for a busy time with releases and tours planned. Get a glimpse into that with “City Lights” below:

AUDIO: Indonesian Junk – “Darkness Calling”

Indonesian Junk have been making a name for themselves in Milwaukee’s punk scene for some time. The band have put out a number of releases, and recently added a new EP to their catalog with “Darkness Calling”. The band have a sound that sort of feels like if the early Ramones records, the New York Dolls, and Cheap Trick (fittingly, since their name references “Surrender”) all merged together. This record continues in that tradition, with frontman Daniel James delivering sneering vocals on songs like “C’Mon And Love Me”. Instrumentally, James, bassist Johnny Cyanide, and drummer Mike Mattner might be tighter than ever on this release, and that’s a promising sign for where the band is headed. Indonesian Junk are putting out high quality music that expands beyond the realm of punk rock while keeping the ethos, and you can hear that on “Darkness Calling” below:

B&E Weekly Jams Presented by Bublr Bikes – 8/26 – 9/1/2018

AUDIO: Indonesian Junk – “When I Find You”

Indonesian Junk are preparing for a big second half of 2018. The band is getting set to release their new EP, “Darkness Calling” on August 23rd, and in advance of that, we’ve got the first single from the release, “When I Find You”. The track is bouncy rock n’ roller, with a simple premise; when Indonesian Junk finds you, you’re gonna get beat up. Plain and simple. We’ll be looking for more from the band when the EP releases, and that’s followed with a release show featuring Platinum Boys and Fox Face at High Dive on August 23rd.
