AUDIO: Von Alexander – “Glory”

As we get closer and closer to the official release of Von Alexander’s “Mayhem1993”, we get another preview with Von’s latest track, “Glory”. Produced by Rednmbus, the track flip flops from uptempo verses to a chilled out hook, and Von ensures that he flexes on everyone with this one. We’ve seen Von grow up and mature his sound in the process over the years, and it’s really starting to feel like “Mayhem1993” will be the manifestation of all that progress. Regardless of if you care about seeing that growth in action or not, it’s undeniable that “Glory” is a major record. Check it out here:

VIDEO: Von Alexander – “Waves”

Vonny Del Fresco is dead. Von Alexander, who generated his initial buzz under the previous moniker, is very much alive however, and we get to watch that transformation in the stunning Damien Blue directed visuals for “Waves”. In the video, the last of VDF is tied to a tree in the woods and left for dead, and it’s up to Von Alexander to rescue his presence. Luckily, he’s there in time to capture and bottle that essence, and Von Alexander receives new life. This is a perfect metaphor for Von’s transformation, which you can hear on the “Von” EP. Check out the “Waves” video below:

AUDIO: Von Alexander – “Waves”

The artist once known as Vonny Del Fresco is back, rebranded as Von Alexander, and it appears that he is refocused on greatness, exemplified in recent single “Waves”. Produced by DMND, Von’s style seems to have switched up ever so slightly, with a more ambitious flow than previous releases. There is, however, still the same attention to detail, and the result is a top-notch quality track. Check out “Waves” below:

AUDIO: Vincent vanGREAT Featuring Vonny Del Fresco, El Shareef, and A.P.R.I.M.E. – “Critical Contition”

SAFS Crew producer Vincent vanGREAT and Uni-Fi Records are kicking off their 2015 with a bang. This new track, “Critical Condition” is a punch in the mouth, with an amped up energy, and features from three strong emcees. El Shareef, Vonny Del Fresco, and A.P.R.I.M.E. of AUTOMatic all get to hop all over this beat, and definitely do their best work on it. This is a certified head nodder, and I’ll almost guarantee you’ll go back to listen to it multiple times.

2014: Milwaukee’s Music Scene In Review

It’s the time of year where everybody gets all sentimental about the past twelve months, and I figured I would throw in my two cents, as well. And I’ll say something that’s going to seem bold to some and will cause others to groan, but it’s truly how I feel about the Milwaukee music scene right now…

Something is really happening here.

There’s the feeling of a swell, like something is going to explode. Now, I know what you’re thinking. “Well duh, something is happening in every city musically.” And I know that similar claims have been made in previous years, but it’s never really been more apparent than now that there is a lot of great music being made here, and there’s some traction forming from that. There’s a bevy of young, talented acts in all genres that are working towards something to take pride in, and truly call their own. It’s not so much about “win the city” anymore, rather than being part of something that will help everyone thrive. While Milwaukee is still not a major destination for music from a national perspective, I think that the artists and bands here are beyond caring about that. It’s finally become more about the music itself. Just make quality music, and the rest will follow.

And the great, quality music is abundant. While in the past, there were claims that Milwaukee was building a music scene, in actuality, it felt disjointed, with pockets of brilliance here and there. Now, it seems like the quality is shining so bright that it overshadows the less than ambitious music being made here, which definitely wasn’t always the case. And while Milwaukee still has it’s share of things that could be done better in terms of a music scene, progress is being made. That’s something to take pride in.

On the indie/alternative/rock side of things, great bands and great releases are popping up out of virtually nowhere. There’s a Bay View scene, and a Riverwest scene, and the standouts are bands that are connecting both of them. Bands like The Fatty Acids, Soul Low, Vic and Gab, and hosts of others are taking the city by storm, contributing to the history of eclectic, experimental indie music that has been made here for decades, and it seems like someone new pops up all the time. I was just blown away by Canopies. Last week I was blown away by Migo. In the past it’s been bands like Paper Holland, GGOOLLDD, and Vinyl Theatre. The good stuff just keeps coming out, and it’s garnering attention.

The hip hop scene that was once lauded by members of the city’s musical community is also making such quality music that it can’t be ignored, as well. There’s incredible potential in artists like Pizzle, Klassik, Webster X, and countless others leading the charge. Younger artists like Bliss and Alice, Vonny Del Fresco, and Genesis Renji are ridiculously impressive, and national outlets are giving these artists their moment in the spotlight. There’s so many new artists coming out that it’s hard to acknowledge all of the great hip hop I’ve heard in 2014, but believe me when I say that there is great potential that needs to get noticed. The quality is finally rising to the top and creating a buzz here.

There’s real development adjacent to the music community, as well. Not only does the music have to be quality, but the support systems for said music have to be legitimate, too. The media coverage, video quality, and radio play for local music has all gone up lately. The combined outlets of Shepherd Express, WMSE, 88Nine Radio Milwaukee, and finally JSOnline have an increased voice to the rest of the city for exposing local talent. We’re seeing videos worthy of making MTV and other national outlets, and (surprise, surprise) those videos are subsequently being placed on those national platforms. The quality is here. We can all embrace it now.

With that said, there’s still plenty of work to be done. We still need more venues embracing local music. We still need a stronger sense of unity between artists. We still need to ultimately convince more people to come to shows and buy records and support their local acts. But damn, has Milwaukee busted through the glass ceiling this year (We had a stage at South by Southwest, for crying out loud!).

So now it’s time to keep going, and do your part. Get your friend to come out to a show from some band they haven’t seen before. Hell, go see a band that you’ve never heard before. See what the other scenes are like here. Experience it all, and take pride in it. Something really is going on, here.

I’ll get off my soapbox now. But thank you for a great 2014, Milwaukee. Let’s do some more cool stuff next year.

-Allen

EP: Vonny Del Fresco – “After The Fall”

Hot off of the buzz that his “Noir Designer” video has been generating, Milwaukee’s Vonny Del Fresco recently released his “After The Fall” EP. This is a long awaited release from Del Fresco, and you can tell that he put a lot of thought and effort into this. It’s definitely a high quality EP all the way around; I couldn’t stop listening from the moment I hit play. I’m fairly certain you won’t stop listening to it, either. Check it out below:

2014 is bound to be a great year for this week’s Milwaukee Artist of the Week, Vonny Del Fresco. Recently, the high profile, up and coming emcee dropped his video for “Noir Designer”. Premiering on Earmilk, VDF made a name for himself early in the year. “Noir Designer” comes in advance of his “After The Fall” EP, which undoubtedly will bring in more of the same exposure that his latest visuals garnered.

Aside from his upcoming project, VDF has already made a name for himself in Milwaukee. With a flair for design and style, he combines true lyrical skill with ambient, laid back beats. With some occasional R&B flare thrown into his music, Del Fresco’s style is pure smoothness. As the “Noir Designer” video shows, Vonny Del Fresco can carry the spotlight all on his own, as well. His flow is just as artistic as it is mainstream, which is a harder feat to pull off than it sounds. Vonny Del Fresco is ready for mainstream exposure.

“After The Fall” will be a coming of age of sorts for Vonny. While he’s dropped a handful of great songs that have circulated on Soundcloud, including frequent collaborations with Dee Phr3sh!, this EP is a complete project all his own, and I’m guessing it will turn quite a few heads. Be sure to look for it when it comes out on January 19th. Check out the video for “Noir Designer” below, as well.

Milwaukee Artist of the Week – 12/14/12 – Dee Phr3sh

This week’s Milwaukee Artist of the Week is Dee Ph3sh, another one of the many young, talented emcees in Milwaukee. On Wednesday, Dee came out with his newest mixtape, Glory Road. The whole tape has a real consistent sound, matching incredibly stylish beats with relentless lyrics. Dee’s delivery is polished as well, which isn’t something that can normally be said about 19 year old emcees (or 20, as of next week). Surprisingly, the tape doesn’t feature any other rappers. In the past, he’s been known to collaborate with other local standouts Vonny Del Fresco, Pizzle, and more. Not surprisingly, however, Dee takes the spotlight and runs with it, though. The lyricism and style definitely makes this tape a must download. Download it via 10ToesDown.net by clicking on the album cover. In addition to this, check out “Mighty Freezy” from one of Dee’s previously released tapes below that.

Milwaukee Artist of the Week – 11/16/12 – Vonny Del Fresco

This week’s Milwaukee Artist of the Week was submitted to us not by the artist himself, but actually was a fan suggestion. Vonny Del Fresco is just one of several up and coming emcees in Milwaukee, and at only 19 years of age, he’s already proving that he can hang with or exceed some veteran rappers. His latest release, FVVLSE, is nothing but smooth. This can’t be called a standout release for VDF, though, because everything he does has a consistent style. FVVLSE is definitely worth the download. On one listen, it’s apparent that Vonny Del Fresco is one of the leaders of the next generation of Milwaukee hip hop, and Milwaukee music in general. Check out “Shift Key”, from FVVLSE, below:

Vonny Del Fresco – “Shift Key” (Video)

Artists like Dee Phr3sh! and Vonny Del Fresco continue to impress me. They’re still young, but when they do things, they make sure that there’s a certain level of quality to them. There’s times when I think that artists like them really can make a name for themselves if they keep up with that professionalism with every release. From a videographer standpoint, this video is appealing, because it shows that you can make an impressive video without a lot of money being tossed around. This just flat out looks cool. Watch “Shift Key”:

Vonny Del Fresco – “Gone”

If you take the Weeknd, put it in a blender with Sango, and put Vonny del Fresco, you get “Gone”, the newest track from VDF. I’m a fan of everything that him and Dee Phr3sh! are doing at such a young age. It seems like there’s a lot of young talent jumping leaps and bounds with every track they release, and this is no exception. Check out “Gone”:

Dee Phr3sh! & Vonny Del Fresco – “Sunwalking”

Never ones to dissapoint, Dee Phr3sh! & Vonny Del Fresco keep their momentum rolling from an impressive 2011 into “Sunwalking”, their first track of 2012. It almost seems like you could put on any beat, at any time, and these two could spaz out over it. That’s impressive to me. Experience how on point everything is with “Sunwalking”:

Euroclub Presents “On Our Way To St. Tropez” (Mixtape)

The Euroclub has been working on some big things lately. This kinda flew under my radar, but once I got a chance to listen to it, I was really amazed at how the different sounds on this mixtape all came together. There’s a lot of big name Milwaukee talent on here throughout the whole tape, and it all flows. Click here or on the album cover to download this tape from the Euroclub.

Also, here’s the song that’s been stuck in my head from this tape. Deletah’s “This Sound Dope”

Those Euro Kids (Vonny Del Fresco / Dee Phr3sh) – “Mighty Freezy” & “Balconies” (Videos)

Vonny Del Fresco and Dee Phr3sh just released two new videos within a real short time frame of one another. Since they’re both young Milwaukee artists, and they both work with one another frequently, and I have a lot of homework I should be doing, I put both of their videos together in one post. It’s hard to say which video I like better, anyway, so check them both out:
