2019 Soundset Lineup Announced

Another piece to the summer music festival calendar is coming together, as the 2019 Soundset lineup is released by Rhymesayers Entertainment and Rose Presents today. This year’s festival is set to take place on Sunday, May 26th at the Minnesota State Fair Grounds, and features headlining sets from Lil Wayne, G-Eazy, SZA, Run The Jewels, Atmosphere, and more. It’s a full day of hip hop in the making, and also important, as it clarifies several acts that could potentially play (or not play) Summerfest this year. Check out this year’s lineup below:

“Summer” Comes Early on Lil T-Shirt’s New Video

By Deuce

Lil T-Shirt’s recently released music video, “Summer”, is one viewers won’t soon forget. The images are stark—slow motion stills of a Stockholm glen, women dressed in all white toting 12 gauges, a man silently pushed to the depths of a placidly calm sea. None of it makes sense, none of it attempts to offer an explanation for these actions, most of all the lyrics, which seem to interminably echo the refrain of ‘summer love’.

These transporting visuals, however, do well to capture the transcendent feel of the less than three minute track that sounds like almost anything but a summertime anthem—which likely explains why the video was released at the end of autumn/beginning of winter. The vocals are forlorn, dripping with effects, while the track itself—barren, bass heavy, plodding along—couches what could very well be post-teenage angst about a love affair conceivably gone awry.

Director Ottilia Wahl chose the imagery for this piece well. The entire shoot is populated by only four characters, including the soon-to-be-vanished singer. While Lil T-Shirt runs through perhaps a verse and a half of high notes, he’s aimlessly bounced along in the back of a pickup driven by a possibly spurned (ex-?) lover. The video’s strength is in its singularity—the bearing of firearms of the threesome receiving the truck’s driver in a heartfelt embrace, the flame of a cigarette being lit, the welcome toast after the deed is done and the singer’s disappeared into the murky depths.

A more straightforward singer would have titled this one “Autumn”. Perhaps it’s the irony in Lil T-Shirt, and his testimony as an artist, that these themes, echoed in the music to “Summer” that he produced and which reverberates throughout his vocals, made him punctuate this haunting melody with a decidedly specious title. In any event it works well, as does the track itself.

First Wave of 2018 Riot Fest Lineup Announced

Screw your middle of the day concert lineup announcements! Riot Fest waited until 8 PM local time to released the first half of this year’s lineup, and it’s definitely a solid one. In addition to the punk rock mainstays (including Milwaukee’s Direct Hit!) this year has a bit of a early new wave feel to it as well, with acts like Blondie, Elvis Costello, and Gary Numan descending on Douglas Park in Chicago. Also, Jerry Lee Lewis is playing, and that’s punk if we’ve ever seen it. Check out the full lineup below, and visit RiotFest.org for tickets.

VIDEO: Klassik – “STAGESlayer” Live at Krave Dance Club (SXSW 2015)

One of the highlights of Klassik’s busy South By Southwest schedule this year was Hustle Simmons’ Hustlepalooza, held annually at Krave Dance Club. The crowd was out in full force on 6th St. to see the show in the middle of the last day of SXSW, and they were into Klassik for sure. STAGESlayers is from Klassik’s most recent release, “Summer”, which you can check out here. See the live version below:

8 Takeaways from Summerfest 2014 (So Far)

So here’s the deal. Last night, I intended on reviewing Girl Talk’s set at Summerfest, but from where I was standing in the massive crowd, it was almost impossible to hear him. It didn’t help that the sound at the Miller Oasis was turned down so much that I could hear the Harley-Davidson Roadhouse from the Oasis crowd. So, instead of fighting the crowd, like I did on Wednesday for Arctic Monkeys, I decided to provide you with my takeaways from Summerfest so far. If you’ve been following along on Twitter, you’ve heard some of this, but allow me to elaborate:

1. There’s definitely a stronger police/security presence this year, and that’s a good thing.

After last year’s overcrowding issues on some of the busiest nights of the festival, it’s good to see that there’s more security and police on the grounds this year. Now, let me clarify, they aren’t much stricter than before; I even caught a cop on Chicago St. leaning on his squad car, smoking a stogie on my way out one night. I guess that doesn’t really qualify as crowd control, but the thought that if something were to go down, there’s people available is comforting. Last year, on the Saturday night that the festival was over capacity, and at MGMT’s overcrowded set, I actually had slight fear for my safety if something were to happen, for the first time in over a decade of going to Summerfest. I’m not ashamed to admit that, either. On top of that, I have yet to see a fight this year, though I’m sure that they’ve happened. Maybe that’s an effect of the security presence, no?

2. Face painting is the new “going to shows” trend.

I saw this at South by Southwest this year, and had a fear that this would be the new “thing” at going to shows: glow in the dark face paint. Yes, I’m sorry, kids who just ran out to buy their poi sets or hula hoops, it appears that face paint, is, for some reason, what all the kids are doing this year. Specifically, I’ve seen it by the EDM shows the most, but that doesn’t mean that it’s not happening elsewhere on the grounds. Whatever the case, it’s stupid. Stop doing it. Nobody wants you to be a glow in the dark tiger, anyway.

3. Unsung heroes – the bucket drummers.

These guys are out there day in, day out, providing an incredibly rhythmic use for household items, and more importantly, fueling your drunken post-Summerfest dance parties. Although, I did see one of the groups fighting amongst themselves yesterday. Throw them some change, would ya!

4. You’re not wearing enough clothes.

Look, full disclosure here; I’m 23. I feel really old at Summerfest this year. Especially when I walk into the midgate and see the inevitable running jump-hug from some high school’s freshmen. But moreso when I see the things that people wear and I have concern for their well being. Regardless of age, none of you are wearing enough clothes. It’s been a cold couple of days for the most part. You’re all going to catch pneumonia!

5. They messed up the Big Bang this year, and well, whatever.

The Big Bang isn’t the spectacle that it used to be, but that’s okay. However, it’s been mismanaged a bit. Okay, yeah, it didn’t work the first couple of nights due to the fog. However, Friday night would have been perfect. Saturday probably would have worked, too. I don’t know the forecast for Tuesday, but if it’s fog, I propose we move it all to the 3rd or 4th of July, and call those fireworks The Bigger Bang this year. All in favor, say I.

6. Kids don’t react to bands the same anymore.

I got really bummed about this at Arctic Monkeys and from the little bit of Girl Talk that I’ve seen this year. I’ve heard about it happening at Atmosphere, as well. It seems like some of the younger crowds are going to see concerts just for the sake of being at Summerfest, but not actually enjoying the show that they’re watching. In turn, they’re observing the bands, not watching a concert, resulting in a band playing to rows of people just standing there. Now look, it’s not easy to interact with the band when you’re standing on the bleachers, but you can clap along or something? If you don’t it just makes it weird for everyone. You’re at a music festival, dammit! Have fun! Also, stop standing around in the crowd and talking with each other. Go watch the show on stage that you sort of came to see!

7. Saz’s > everything.

Although I’ve heard of a chicken and waffle cone on the grounds this year, I stand my ground on this one. Saz’s rules the summer festival circuit in Wisconsin.

8. I still love Summerfest.

This is like Christmas for me.

So… Yeah…

What up world?!

It’s been a minute or two since I’ve updated my blog. Sorry, apparently I had this whole school thing to finish up. Let me bring you up to speed again on where things are going…

First off, I’m going to have a lot of content in the near future for you to check out. As I write this, I’m working on getting Mattersville, the short film that I finished this semester, in a form that you can check out online. I kinda really hope that you enjoy it. NOFX, The Swellers, and Milwaukee’s own Prophetic let me use their music for it. Oh, and it won best screenwriting at the Marquette Student Film Festival so that’s… something. I won some colored CD-Rs!? Regardless, I spent four months on it. You should spend a solid 25 minutes watching it. I’ll have a release date on Facebook in the near future. (have you liked us on Facebook yet?)

In addition to that, I also recently co-produced an EP with Christina Kowalsky for Claire Kelly. You should all check her out. Incredibly talented. We (Claire) knocked out all the guitar and vocals in a day. Actually, less than four hours. I tracked everything else at home in a day. It’s not supposed to be that easy, right? Anyway, look out for it. It’s not hip hop. I might have range or something.

Now, for the stuff that kinda matters: where Breaking And Entering is at. We’re gonna try to make more of an effort to meet people face to face this summer. Now that we’re both out of college, we can put in a little more effort to the company. Or something. We’ll put in a little more of whatever it is we do into Breaking And Entering. Go with that. I understand that with buying tees, sometimes you actually want to be able to check out what you’re buying in person. My dream is for there to be a brick and mortar store one day, but that’s nowhere near a possibility… yet. There is also something kinda big that I can’t exactly talk about in the works, but we haven’t had an official meeting about (AKA Steve and I haven’t gone golfing and talked about) it yet. Keep checking in with us. It’ll be worth it.

Hmm… what else…

Oh, block parties. Summer means block parties, and if anybody out there has connections to one, we’re interested in going and selling our tees there. Please forward any information to allen@breakingandentering.net and I’ll look into the possibility of Breaking And Entering being there.

I think that’s all for now. Also, I need a full time gig. But I’ll take care of that.
