VIDEO: Jay Matthes – “In A Song”

Singer-songwriter Jay Matthes has a video out accompanying the tune “In A Song” from his wonderful recent album “Loved and Lost and Found.” Shot by Alex Walzak, the scene finds Matthes up at the mic in various venues, including with his full band in the vintage store Dandy. The song is about honest living and Matthes doing what he knows how to do best – singing in small towns and hanging with the crowds he loves. It’s a song full of joy for the moment and appreciating the little things – check it out!

Singer-songwriter Jay Matthes released a new album last week – his first new music in six years! He brings eleven tracks full of personality and boldness here, incorporating elements of folk rock, Americana and country as he goes. Matthes touches on topics like boozin’ away your problems (“Some People Drink”, “Living 100 Proof”), romantic temptation (“You’re Up to No Good”, “You Try and Tell Her No”), love’s unstoppable force (“When We Danced Slow”, “Down This Road”) and moving forward from what once was (“Too Late to Care”, “Sometimes it Does”) as his spirits shine through grandiose choruses and observant storytelling. Jay Matthes conveys life’s earnest lessons via full-hearted homegrown tales with “Love and Lost and Found.”

Jay Matthes is gearing up for the release of his new album, “Dancing After Dark”, which comes out this Friday. In addition to an album release show on Thursday at Club Garibaldi, he also released the first single from the album yesterday, entitled “Bees and Chickens”. The song is full of down-home country twang, and could easily cut it’s way through the pop-country clutter on mainstream radio. “Dancing In The Dark” is Matthes’ first album in almost three years, and it’s clear that he’s taken his time with crafting an album full of well-written songs like this one. Milwaukee Artist of the Week – 10/10/14 – Jay Matthes

Are you a Milwaukee musician/band? You can submit your music to be the Milwaukee Artist of the Week by emailing links to info@BreakingAndEntering.net. We’ll check out every submission we get!

This week’s Milwaukee Artist of the Week is Jay Matthes, a country/Americana artist with an infectious sound. Without the help of publicists or management, Jay has managed to make a name for himself in Milwaukee’s country music circles, a scene that is relatively small, but also contains a lot of very talented artists. We received an advance copy of Matthes’ latest, “A Drier Place”, which will be released to the public on Saturday at Fire on Water. As someone who admittedly isn’t the biggest country fan in the world, I can honestly tell you that Matthes’ album won me over.

The biggest draw to this album is that it doesn’t contain any of the pop-like post production that many mainstream country albums incorporate these days. As a casual observer of country music, even I can tell you that radio-worthy country music has started to blend elements of pop and rock. This album strays from that, however, and just sticks to straight up country and Americana, and it’s actually a breath of fresh air for listeners of any type of music. Even though the technology is there to make any artist sound better, Matthes’ album is solid because he gets by on raw talent alone. Armed with a guitar, and a surrounding cast of talented musicians, “A Drier Place” makes draws back to a simpler time in country.

From straight up country tunes like “What Pretty Girls Do” to folk/Americana track “Who Found The Whiskey?”, this album is all-original. Completely analog, it’s no wonder as to why Matthes was nominated for best Acoustic Musician this past year. Make sure that you check out the album when it is available, either in person on Saturday, or when it becomes available for download shortly after.

In the meantime, you can check out Matthes’ previous release, “Apt. 201” here via his website.
