Local Band Makes the Austin 100

Austin, Texas is gearing up to host South By Southwest. For those of you that aren’t aware of SXSW, it is Austin’s annual music, film, and interactive festival; it starts March 7 and goes through March 16. NPR released their annual Austin 100 earlier this week. The list features 100 songs by bands performing at the festival, from acts such as Against Me! to a personal favorite of mine, Cloud Nothings.

Also being featured in the list is Paper Holland, a pop-rock band from Milwaukee. Paper Holland released their debut full-length, Happy Belated, in January of 2013. You can listen to it below if you have yet to check it out. For what it’s worth, Happy Belated was one of my favorite records of mine for 2013.

Andrew Kosanke is a guitarist in Paper Holland. He had this to say to about the band’s inclusion in the Austin 100.

“It’s incredibly flattering to be included in the Austin 100. There are so many great bands on the list each year and for us to be included is really exciting. I’m most excited for us to perform and meet new people. It has the potential to be a really great experience and hopefully people like what they hear.”

This is Paper Holland’s first out-of-state show. Most bands do not jump from Milwaukee to Austin, but Paper Holland are not most bands. Please take the time to listen to them, and if you’re going to SXSW, check out their live set. You will not be disappointed.

VIDEO: Major Lazer Featuring Moska & RDX – “Lose Yourself”

Major Lazer continue to blur the lines between dancehall and EDM with their newest video for “Lose Yourself”. This is another track off of the upcoming “Apocalypse Soon” EP. I’m thinking that songs like this will be the soundtrack to many people’s summer. Also, a lot of goats in this video. Not sure how I feel about that. Judge for yourself:

AUDIO: Johnny Cash – “She Used To Love Me A Lot” (Elvis Costello Remix)

The words “Johnny Cash”, “remix”, and “Elvis Costello” don’t usually go together, but in the case of this track, it somehow works. “She Used To Love Me A Lot” is a track from a lost Cash album, “Out Amongst The Stars” which will be released March 25th. In addition to the collection of lost recordings, Elvis Costello lent his own talents in 2014 to remix the track. Listen to the remix via SoundCloud and the original via Vevo below:

VIDEO: A$AP Rocky Featuring Baauer – “Riot Rave”

A$ap Rocky got out his inner rebel in New York City for his “Riot Rave” video. The track features a rather laid back beat from the creator of last year’s Harlem Shake track, Baauer, and unfortunately not a verse from A$ap. It’s described as an art video, showcasing real rioting. Apparently, rioting involves a lot of running, some 5-0 grinds under a bridge, and a visit from an NYPD patty wagon. Apparently it also got real, too. One trash can was harmed in the making of this video. Check it out below:

Raz Simone – Cognitive Dissonance FREE album for download and stream

Alright, alright, alright as promised I said I’d be posting links for free music. Just so happens my first post is a whole album. Available for both streaming and download I proudly present Seattle based rapper Raz Simone. This extremely honest and soulful self produced album has completely blown me away. The album “Cognitive Dissonance” is an introspective look at the artists personal life that people can relate to in their own way. It reminds me of earlier Kid Cudi with a deeper purpose, so I hope you enjoy it.
