VIDEO: Mr. Nice Guy with Steven Pitzl

Our Music Director, Ben Slowey, is more than on top of the local music scene. In addition to his work for Breaking And Entering, he also hosts the Mr. Nice Guy podcast, an interview-based show that reaches out to Milwaukeeans for conversations about what motivates them. Many of these shows fittingly involve the local music scene, and we’ll be sharing some of them here as well.

Today, Ben talks with musician and producer Steven Pitzl, who works with N43 Records. He’s got two projects, Antics and Four Giants; the latter’s debut single “Ill Intentions” came out about a year ago. They discussed Steven’s inception into Milwaukee pop punk as a teenager, the rigorous but exciting lifestyle of touring, the typical workday of the busy producer, his current projects, and the opportunity of living in LA. Big Beat MKE 2019: Opening Round Night Two Recap

Phat Nerdz

Night one was already a strong indicator of how Big Beat MKE 2019 would go, but the battles in night two of the opening round reaffirmed that this year’s tournament field is incredibly strong. In addition to some skilled performances from Nile and Phat Nerdz, night two featured Trademark vs. Four Giants, and James Ashen vs. GLDN Child. The atmosphere was electric, and the Jackalope Lounj was ready for battles.

The opening contest pitted the hip hop style of Trademark vs. a more electro-leaning Four Giants. The crowd was feeling both producers styles, which were exceptionally clean, and before the third round was over, there were calls from the balcony for the first overtime of the 2019 tournament. It went the distance, but in the end, Four Giants prevailed, getting the crowd moving with an upbeat final beat.

The second battle of the night was another tough call, as James Ashen went head to head with 2018 Big Beat MKE quarterfinalist GLDN Child. Again, the beats were hitting hard, with the crowd getting into the affair, and when all was said and done, host Twan Mack wanted to make an OG call for overtime, and was supported by the crowd. James Ashen saved his hardest beat for last, and ultimately walked away with the victory, though the decision was close.

The tournament is heating up, and we’re only halfway through the opening round! We’ll see you back at Jackalope Lounj next Thursday night, as Cream City Beat Battle champion Godxilla does battle with Cuban Lynx, and former Miltown Beatdown champion 40 Mil goes up against Tuan G. In addition to that, the Hiii Tribe is taking over, with performances from King Myles and Sha. Don’t miss it! Your updated bracket is below:

AUDIO: Lex Allen – “I.D.E.N.T.I.T.Y”

Breakout Milwaukee artist Lex Allen is preparing for the release of his upcoming EP, “I.D.E.N.T.I.T.Y” this week, and on Friday, we got a preview with the release of the title track. Produced by Four Giants, the track is more outspoken than we’ve previously heard from Lex, but it doesn’t feel out of place for his sound and personality. As an advocate for LGBTQ+ equality, Allen has never been shy about his feelings, but the tone of the message is more robust on this track. It feels as though his confidence is stronger than ever on the song, accented by brash synths and tight percussion, which is a sign of only good things to come from the EP. You can celebrate the release of “I.D.E.N.T.I.T.Y” this Saturday at The Cooperage with Lex, Immortal Girlfriend and DJ DRiPSweat, and listen to the title track below:

AUDIO: Zed Kenzo – “Type”

The rapid evolution of Zed Kenzo over the last several months is very real, and you can hear that on her newest single, “Type”. Produced by Four Giants, the twerk-friendly track is pretty brash as far as the beat is concerned, and Zed has some of her best delivery yet on the microphone. Lyrically, the track is about the Milwaukee emcee being fine on her own, which we’re seeing more and more as these solo releases come out. This is the third single we’ve gotten from Zed Kenzo since the turn of the year, and each track builds on the previous work so far. Check out the latest by streaming “Type” below:
