AUDIO: Minna Ora – “Snow”
Finnish singer-songwriter Minna Ora has been building her catalogue one element at a time, and with “Lumi (Snow),” her eighth solo single, the collection finally reaches winter. The earlier releases travelled a long way beyond Finland and earned plenty of praise along the route, so expectations were fairly high going into this one. It meets them.
Credit lists on new singles are often longer than the lyrics these days, with a writer here, a producer there and a few more people tweaking things in between. Minna’s list has one name on it. She composed the music, wrote the words, arranged, recorded and produced the track, and that kind of single minded approach tends to show in the finished song. “Lumi” has a clear point of view from the first second to the last, with no sense of anyone pulling it in another direction.
Snow simply falls, on everyone, whether they’re ready or not, and Minna seems to understand that as something close to grace. Given how often her writing leans on spirituality and the unexplained, that reading feels right. The chance to choose again, and to choose better, isn’t presented as a prize for good behaviour. It’s just there, waiting, like a fresh fall outside the window in the morning.
That hope means more because of where the song starts. The narrator is lonely, and she has been for a while. Life has dealt her enough hardship that the plain, settled routines most people stop even noticing now feel completely beyond her. Her one long question, a single sentence that begins with “had I,” circles back to the particular moments where things might have gone differently. Minna sings it without self pity, which is harder to pull off than it sounds, and it makes the narrator someone you want to root for rather than feel sorry for.
