AUDIO: Jessmin – “Hyperfixated”

“I can get completely caught up in a person, a feeling or even a conversation that hasn’t happened yet.” I laughed when I read that quote from Jessmin, because I once spent a whole bus ride rehearsing a text I never sent. Her debut EP “Hyperfixated”, out since 2 October, is five songs built around that exact habit. Four were singles you might already know. The fifth, the title track, is the one I keep going back to.

Watch the video first. It’s one night in a bar and nothing fancier than that. She notices a guy early on, and as the evening goes you watch her attention shrink until he’s the only thing she’s tracking. No twist, no big reveal, and it doesn’t need one.

Then listen properly. The verses sprint, words tumbling over each other the way thoughts do at 2am. She runs through every possible conversation with him and settles on none of them, which is the funny part and also the sad part. Then the chorus arrives and that’s it, you have it for good.

My first reaction to the guitars was a flashback to the CD wallet I carried around in 2004, with a badly scratched copy of Avril Lavigne’s Let Go inside. Jessmin grew up on Avril and Hilary Duff and it shows, but the synths laid over the top come from somewhere newer; she listens to a lot of Charli XCX and Oklou, and you can pick that out.

AT Publishing set up the session that started it, putting her in with Alexander Haak and Stijn van Rijsbergen, and they left with a demo. Nick Jongejan, her producer for years, took it on from there, and Jessmin sat in on every production decision and the full mix.
