AUDIO: dak duBois – “Trois”
Milwaukee’s most prolific indie-psych craftsman has done it again. dak duBois dropped his sophomore full-length album “trois” on May 21st, and it’s a 10-track testament to why Dak Wright has become one of the city’s most compelling musical forces.
Following up on his self-titled 2023 debut and the collaborative “The mkE Project” EP from last year, “trois” finds duBois in characteristically vibrant form. The album opens with “transitional lens,” a groovy, instrumental-leaning cut that clocks in at just over two and a half minutes of pure vibe—guitar-forward, breezy, and dripping with that 60s-70s funk and psych influence that’s become his signature sound.
For the uninitiated, duBois is the musical project of Fox Valley transplant Dak Wright, who set up shop in Riverwest several years back and hasn’t slowed down since. The guy is practically a one-man operation, recording and producing from his home studio before bringing the songs to life with his rotating live band, dak duBois & co. His rapid-release approach throughout 2025—dropping singles on a near-monthly basis—clearly built momentum toward this full album statement.
What makes “trois” particularly intriguing is its balance of high energy and laid-back accessibility. The audio fingerprints tell the story: danceable grooves, uplifting arrangements, and that unmistakable instrumental confidence that suggests duBois is comfortable letting the music breathe without always needing to fill every space with vocals.
If you’ve been sleeping on Milwaukee’s indie-psych scene, consider this your wake-up call. Stream “trois” now and catch dak duBois & co. at a venue near you—because if his track record is any indication, he’ll be playing out constantly this summer.
