AUDIO: Outpacer – “Outpacer”

There’s something fitting about a band called Outpacer arriving in Wisconsin and immediately hitting the gas. The project, helmed by Omaha transplant Denver Dalley — a name punk and indie heads will recognize from Desaparecidos, Statistics, Intramural, and PRESSERS — has officially planted its flag in the Midwest with the release of its self-titled debut, “Outpacer.”

After relocating to Wisconsin, Dalley linked up with a crew of local players to build out Outpacer’s sound, and the resulting record plays like a songwriter who’s logged serious mileage but still has plenty of road ahead. The self-titled effort is a tight, guitar-forward rock record that leans into the kind of melodic muscle Dalley has spent the better part of two decades sharpening. Fans of his prior projects will hear the DNA — propulsive rhythms, hooks that don’t overstay their welcome, and lyrics that hit harder the more you sit with them — but Outpacer isn’t a retread. It’s a reset.

The band has been quietly building a presence in the Milwaukee scene, including a stop at The Cooperage last fall sharing a bill with Thelma and the Sleaze and Boybrain. With singles like “Fast Forward,” “Diamonds,” and “The Endless Night” already in rotation and the full-length now out in the wild, Outpacer is shaping up to be one of the more interesting rock additions to Wisconsin’s roster this year.

Stream the self-titled debut below, and keep an eye on local listings — this is a band you’ll want to catch in a small room while you still can.
