AUDIO: Jon Mueller – “Family Secret”

Experimental percussion artist Jon Mueller has a new record out today. We are welcomed by “Whose Emptiness” which puts us in a trance of abandoned buildings and desecrated trinkets through textural percussion. We then enter “Black Glass,” which adds an immense layer of mystery with rippling, reverberating frequencies. Among the instruments Mueller employs with these pieces are singing bowls, gongs, cymbals, and conventional drums. He explains on Bandcamp that a primary theme in the record is how lighting creates different moods and “worlds” through variable configurations of illumination; he wrote each track with a distinct lighting setup. This technique led him to also explore the role of divorces in family and the profound, haunting effect it has on one’s sense of place. Jon Mueller has crafted a gem of a sound experiment here, unearthing buried secrets while doing so. Cover art by Niki Feijen.
