Breaking And Entering’s Five To Watch: September 2016
As a Milwaukee-based music blog, it is our obligation to not only bring Milwaukee to the world, but bring the world to Milwaukee, as well. Five To Watch submissions are handled exclusively through ReverbNation. Click here to submit music to be one of next month’s Five To Watch.
We’re back with our second round of Five to Watch, and we’ve been absolutely flooded in submissions. Thousands of unsigned artists have sent in their music to us via Reverbnation, so needless to say it was a tough call to narrow it down to five. Here’s who we’re feeling this month:
Fly By Midnight (New York, NY)
If you loved the synth-laden pop that made bands like fun. popular, this is a pop group worth checking out. With a slightly retro feel, and a catchy melodies, this New York duo tell a fun story on their single “Brooklyn”, and it’s sure to be caught in your head. If one of their members looks familiar, it’s because multi-instrumentalist Justin Bryte was featured on MTV’s “Dream Bigger”. Bryte, along with producer Slavo, have made national media outlets with their brand of synth pop, and for good reason. Check out “Brooklyn” below:
Lions Among Us (Freedom, PA)
Switching gears completely, Pennsylvania metal band Lions Among Us are definitely a diamond in the rough, with an intense submission in their track “Dreamcatcher”. Reminiscent of early 2000s screamo, the track combines brutal guitars and punching drums with a melodic hook, and the two parts of the song compliment each other wonderfully. Check the song out for yourself below:
Trevor Douglas (Fort Weather, TX)
Apparently I should have watched American Idol, because this is the second contestant in two months that has submitted something I’ve really liked. Douglas is a multi-talented artist, growing up around acting, singing, and performing music. At age 18, Douglas is opening doors for himself, with well crafted songwriting, and a plethora of talent. Artists like Trevor Douglas are poised for success, and with song’s like “No Love To Spend”, his future seems almost inevitable. Check him out for yourself:
Olivia (Vernon, British Columbia)
Sometimes, when you hear an artist, you just know that they have the “it” factor to their sound. In the case of Olivia, she’s found her voice, and that’s definitely on display from the first time you hear her. Not only is she vocally talented, but she’s found the type of track that can make her a superstar. Residing in Vernon, BC, she’s already worked with several big name producers, and breakthrough success from Canada to the United States seems imminent. She’s amassed several awards for her work, and we wouldn’t be surprised if there were a lot more on the way. Catch lightning in a bottle by checking out her single, “Outshine The Stars”
Some Velvet Morning (London, England)
London has a tradition of ultra-cool indie rock, and Some Velvet Morning are a band worthy of etching their name into that history. With a frenzy of energy, comparisons to bands like We Are Scientists and The Killers are easy, but their sound also has some very U2-sounding qualities to it. The end result is summer-festival caliber pop-rock, and a sound that is deserving of their career elevating to the next level. The song has all the components of a hit, and would fit in the rotation at your favorite alternative radio station. Check it out for yourself here:
