This week’s Milwaukee Artist of the Week is Evan Christian, an incredibly talented guitarist with a knack for all things soulful and heartfelt. Christian picked up the guitar on his own at a young age, which is just the beginning of his natural talent. He released his first album in 2005, and has continue to evolve from flamenco to jazz to blues, and everywhere in between. He often showcases his handywork as a flamenco guitarist, and has the hardware to back it up, too. He has won two consecutive WAMI awards for best guitarist in 2008 and 2009, respectively, and has also picked up Best Guitarist, Best Jazz Artist, and two Best Acoustic Musician awards from the Shepherd Express, as well
One listen to Christian, and it’s more than apparent that he is deserving of all that praise. He takes to his guitar with an amazing amount of precision and speed, fingerpicking in the traditional flamenco style with ease. On other tracks, he is nothing but smooth, using his guitar work as an accent to a steady jazz groove. Vocally, Evan Christian isn’t leaving anything but sincere. On the songs that he sings, you can hear the authenticity of his bluesy tone. With just the right amount of rasp, and his almost inherit ability to ride rhythms, Christian creates music that genuine music fans can’t help but feel. Evan Christian is wildly talented, and he showcases his range on any track that he lays down. He is truly a unique talent, and definitely worth multiple listens.
