Singer/songwriter Sludge Hawking has returned with “The Wilder Country,” a psych-folk album that feels truly unique. Blending layers of lapsteel guitar with blasting organs, the record feels like a whirlwind of different genres, each sounding like they were plucked at random, but all working together as a cohesive unit. There’s a truly manic pace about songs like opener “Get Serious,” all while Hawking’s vocals remain a cool constant over the top. There’s also lyrics about the state of the world, which work well with a chaotic score behind it.
