AUDIO: Julia Thomsen and Sophie Bickerdike – “Like A Light Bulb”
“Like A Light Bulb” is one of the loveliest things Julia Thomsen has put her name to, and Sophie Bickerdike’s voice is a big reason why.
The piano arrives first, and it is beautifully strange. Thomsen plays it so lightly that the notes seem to scatter rather than ring, falling into a short pattern that circles back again and again. Rather than growing tiresome, that loop becomes more captivating with every pass, quietly drawing the listener further in until the whole track feels like a gentle current carrying everything along with it.
Bickerdike then steps in with a vocal of real grace. She sings softly but with total assurance and shapes every line with warmth and care, and the way her voice settles over Thomsen’s pattern feels effortless.
The result is a wonderfully calming piece of ambient music, rich in atmosphere yet never cluttered. It glows with a kindness that makes it easy to return to, and it rewards repeat listens with small details that reveal themselves over time. Fans of Hammock or Library Tapes will feel right at home, but this track has a tenderness all of its own.
