Milwaukee songwriter Ken Mennen strips things all the way down on his new release, “Something Real” — and the title turns out to be a pretty honest mission statement. This is acoustic music in its most unvarnished form: six strings, a voice with lived-in edges, and a set of songs that trust the listener enough to sit in the quiet moments.

Where a lot of modern acoustic records tend to reach for polish and production sheen, Mennen goes the other direction. The arrangements feel handmade, the vocals sit right up against the mic, and the whole thing plays like a late-night porch session you weren’t sure you were invited to but are glad you stumbled onto. It’s the sort of record that rewards headphones and a slow evening.
