AUDIO: PunksIncognito – “Grit”

PunksIncognito are back, and this time they’re trading in the polish for something a little more raw. The rock-leaning duo — known for their collaborative songwriting and guitar-forward sensibilities — have just dropped their latest release, “Grit,” and the title pretty much tells you everything you need to know about where their heads were at in the studio.

True to the PunksIncognito ethos, “Grit” leans into the kind of unvarnished, riff-driven rock that has quietly made them one of the more interesting under-the-radar projects coming out of the Milwaukee scene. There’s a looseness here that feels intentional — the sound of two songwriters who’ve stopped trying to clean up the edges and started leaning into them instead. If their earlier tracks like “Corvette Summer” and “I Can’t Feel My Face (The Party)” hinted at a band willing to throw a few elbows, “Grit” is the record where they fully commit to the bit.

Milwaukee has always rewarded artists who can balance hooks with a little dirt under the fingernails, and PunksIncognito seem to understand the assignment. “Grit” isn’t trying to reinvent the rock playbook — it’s just trying to play it loud, honest, and without apologies. Which, frankly, is more than enough.
