Abortion Access Benefit at Promises!

There will be a powerhouse night of music at Promises in Walker’s Point on Saturday, December 10th that will raise funds for Midwest Access Coalition, an organization that supports folks in need of abortion with access to safe medical procedures as well as food, medicine, transportation and childcare support. Bands playing will be Milwaukee’s RAT BATH, Mortgage Freeman and Pescatarian At Best plus Chicago’s The Dearlys, then DJ Megadon will keep the party going after the show.

Fred Kenyon of RAT BATH speaks on the event’s curation. “Whenever we organize a benefit, we try to find fellow artists with the same values and interests to play. Most local musicians we encounter are happy to donate their time and talents to raise money and awareness for organizations that benefit our community and the wellbeing of others.”

Midwest Access Coalition stuck out to them because of the transportation aspect; since Roe v. Wade was overturned this summer, abortion is now illegal in most cases in Wisconsin. However, the procedure is still legal in Illinois and Minnesota, so Midwest Access Coalition can help Wisconsin folks in need travel safely to where they can receive proper care.

Reproductive rights are human rights, and this event should not be looked at as political but as the right thing to do. “We hope that in 2023 the separation between political events and providing mutual aid becomes better understood,” Kenyon said. “One way we do that is by focusing on grassroots organizations and looking into what direct action they are taking. Are they backed by politicians, or are they focusing on the people and communities impacted? It’s become more and more clear that we cannot rely on our government to serve our best interests, so community outreach and mutual aid is our best bet to make a difference.”

It’ll be $10 at the door. Music starts at 9. Visit Midwest Access Coalition’s website here. Visit the Facebook event for the benefit here.
