This week’s Milwaukee Artist of the Week is Tion Fresco, a rapper that has been on my radar for years, but took around a 3 year break since his last release. This week, however, he released “S.C.U.M. Bag”, a mixtape full of hard beats and impressive flows. It’s clear that in his time off, Tion didn’t lose a step at all.

“S.C.U.M. Bag” is a bit of a showcase for Fresco. Although he already had a nice flow before, it sounds like he really stepped his game up this time around. If you’ve heard his earlier releases, you’ll notice that his sound has evolved, and this mixtape is much more polished than his earlier work. “S.C.U.M. Bag” is a more complete project, with Fresco opting to operate on beats that can at times get close to trap music. Previously, it sounded like he was looking for which beats would work best for his flow, and it’s apparent that with this project he has found them.

On the mic, Fresco handles his business with ease. On tracks like “3 Peat” and “Rap Song”, Tion makes it look effortless, with steady verses that ride the beat perfectly. There’s never any instances where it sounds like he is trying to extend his bars out, or conversely try to fit too many words into a line. One listen to “S.C.U.M. Bag”, and you can just tell that he has that X factor that makes him stand out. Stream it for yourself below, and watch the video for lead single, “Smoke Up” as well.
