AUDIO: Pierhead Collective – “New Era”
Milwaukee’s DIY scene has never been shy about doing things its own way, and the Pierhead Collective is the latest proof that the city’s artist-led ethos is alive, loud, and refusing to ask permission. What started as a handful of friends trading gear, floors, and studio time has quickly grown into one of the most talked-about creative hubs in the city — a rotating cast of punk, indie, and hip hop artists who are as comfortable booking a basement show as they are pressing a limited-run cassette.
“New Era” feels like a mission statement more than a single. The track leans into the collective’s collaborative DNA — jagged guitar work, blown-out low end, and vocals that trade off between snarl and swagger. It’s the sound of a scene that has stopped waiting for validation from bigger cities and started building its own infrastructure, one release at a time.
For anyone who’s been paying attention to Milwaukee’s underground over the last few years — the warehouse shows, the zines, the shared PA systems being hauled up and down Center Street — this release is going to sound familiar in the best way. It’s messy, it’s confident, and it’s very clearly Milwaukee.
With Bandcamp Friday coming back around, now is the perfect time to throw a few bucks directly into the pockets of the artists actually building this scene. Fees waived, artists paid, no middleman skimming off the top. Stream the release, share it with a friend who still thinks Milwaukee is only about beer and cheese curds, and grab a copy while you’re at it.
