REVIEW: Real Estate at Vivarium 4/8/24

“Did everyone see the thing today?!” exclaimed bassist Alex Bleeker of Real Estate to the Vivarium crowd, referring to the solar eclipse that occurred earlier. Unlike the meteorological event of the day, a night of great live music occurs weekly in the many intimate venues in Milwaukee. Vivarium opened its doors just months before, but the space already felt broken in—even if the plants are fake, they cascaded from the rafters organically to set the scene for a show. Real Estate’s atlantic-indie sound was welcomed by the midwest crowd with bumping heads and multiple pops of recognition for singles off of their new album, Daniel (most notably “Water Underground”). The band shifted between different guitars and often worked with sound engineers to tweak certain levels for a pleasing range of layered guitar for each song. Even with this, the rhythm of the night was consistently paced with unique drum patterns, a seamless 3-track run, and dynamic lighting that brought life to the greenery. In the dark hours of a day where the sun nearly disappeared, it was good to see that Real Estate was just as comfortable on stage as the audience was while sharing their evening with them.
