AUDIO: Gauss – “Whale Fall”
After over ten years of being a band, Gauss have decided that sadly, it’s time to conclude the project – but not before releasing their long-awaited final album, which came out last Friday. Incorporating their eclectic blend of post-punk, prog and post-rock, Gauss bring their masterfully artisanal sound to life one last time, combining patient poeticism with textural, melodic whimsy. The songs are given plenty of room to breathe and maximalize different things while never wandering too far from core motifs. “Whale Fall” is a venture into mesmerizing idiosyncrasies, evoking nautical and spiritual imagery with sonic garniture of French horn, violin and keyboards; you could focus on any individual instrument in a Gauss song and be summoned to different pockets of the imagination. We’re going to miss Gauss but keep an eye out for the many other projects its members (Eaten by Trees, Mere of Light, Large Print, Social Caterpillar, etc.) are involved in!
