VIDEO: Mr. Nice Guy With Justin Perkins of Mystery Room Mastering
One of our contributors, Ben Slowey, is more than on top of the local music scene. In addition to his work for Breaking And Entering, he also hosts the Mr. Nice Guy podcast, an interview-based show that reaches out to Milwaukeeans for conversations about what motivates them. Many of these shows fittingly involve the local music scene, and we’ll be sharing some of them here as well.
Today, Ben talks with the man behind Mystery Room Mastering, Justin Perkins. He has been recording music since he was a teenager and started Mystery Room over a decade ago. Among his noteworthy clients have been Ol’ Dirty Bastard, The Replacements, Tenement, En Vogue, and Michael Franti & Spearhead. He has also played in a number of bands himself and teaches once a week at MATC. They discussed Justin’s early days playing in bands and getting himself into recording, the art of mastering, sound quality and streaming services, how his work has impacted how he listens to music, and why songs fade out rather than cut.
