Artist Spotlight: The Grovelers
It was a lively night of original rock music at the Riverwest dive Circle A on Friday night, bringing a great turnout of friends old and new. Psychedelic rock band The Unheard Of and rock and rollers The Grovelers played sets of fun, raw energy.
The Grovelers consist of vocalist/harmonica Skip Peer, guitarist Mike Graff, bassist Lemonie Fresh, and drummer Dane Didier. Formed in 2013, the band takes influences from punk, rockabilly, and 1950’s rock and roll. They are especially popular with outdoor summer gigs and breweries.
“We love Circle A,” Didier said. “Due to the size of the room and lack of stage, the audience is just a few few from you…you get the immediacy and closeness that you don’t get at other venues.”
The band released their record “Cream City Nights” in May – a follow-up to their 2016 debut “Derelicts & Screw-Ups.” A camera crew was filming their set Friday for the title track’s video. Didier describes the recording process.
“We recorded with our friend Nolan – he has a personal recording studio here in Milwaukee. We started spring of 2018 and the recording process was relaxed and done over several months, coming into the studio here and there when schedules allowed. We attacked this LP from the standpoint of “it’s a studio recording” as opposed to our last record where we tried to keep the recording as honest as possible to what someone would hear live.”
The Grovelers are writing new songs and hope to record more music in late 2020. They do not currently have any more shows booked.
