She’s Green Unveil New EP ‘swallowtail,’ Heading to Reading & Leeds This Summer
Minneapolis dream-pop conjurers she’s green have officially released their new EP, swallowtail, out today via Photo Finish Records. Seven tracks deep, the record is a hazy, iridescent plunge into the band’s signature “moss music” — that forest-floor sound where shoegaze fog, dream-pop shimmer, and indie-rock backbone all tangle together like roots under a stump.
If Chrysalis was the band learning to stretch their wings, swallowtail is the full emergence. “Our third EP ‘swallowtail’ is an emergence. An explorative chapter that expands upon the previous two,” guitarist Liam Armstrong says. “It laments dreams and memories in the wake of a great transformation and marks a change in our approach to songwriting and recording. It is our first studio-recorded project and our biggest project yet.” You can hear that leap in every reverb-drenched corner — the arrangements feel more deliberate, the dynamics more daring, and vocalist Zofia Smith’s otherworldly upper register has never sounded more commanding.
The EP opens with “locket,” a track that doubles as the record’s first official music video, premiering today. Shot like a half-remembered daydream, the clip wanders through pockets of sunlight and overgrown greenery — fitting for a song Smith describes as being “about the people we try to reach but can’t—the ones who keep their hearts closed off, refusing to open up even when a part of them might long to.”

Fans have been slowly handed the keys to this world all year. February’s “mettle” delivered thunderous riffs cut with hope. April’s “paper thin” turned the dial toward soaring reverberation and the tangled wiring between love and lust. May brought “empty house,” a lo-fi meditation on ephemerality directed by the band themselves. And June’s “close your eyes” stretched out into a seven-minute lucid-dream soundscape inspired by a recurring mystery figure. Taken together with new cuts “dear ivy” and “keeper,” swallowtail plays like a full descent — the kind of record you don’t just listen to, you get lost in.
The press has been paying attention. NME and Alternative Press have both anointed the five-piece a “Band to Watch,” Stereogum called their sound “both delicate and austere like a pinned iridescent butterfly,” and The FADER dubbed them “a shot to the arm for the shoegaze revival scene.” Earlier this year, the band sold out a debut headlining run in China, taped a widely praised KEXP session (DJ Cheryl Waters: “Absolutely beautiful”), supported Turnover across North America with Narrow Head, and made their Bonnaroo debut.
Now comes the next chapter. she’s green head back to Europe this August, kicking the tour off August 27 at Craufurd Arms in Milton Keynes before making their long-awaited Reading & Leeds Festival debuts the same weekend. From there it’s a run through the UK, France, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, and beyond, wrapping September 11 in Cologne.
