Pia Toscano Returns With Heartfelt New Single “Redirected” — Her First Release Since 2023
Some songs sneak up on you. “Redirected,” the new single from powerhouse vocalist Pia Toscano, is one of them — a quietly devastating, ultimately uplifting ballad that turns heartbreak into a mission statement. Released today via Nashville’s Melody Place Records, it marks Toscano’s first new music since 2023 and her first label home since parting ways with Warner Brothers Records back in 2018. In other words: it’s been a minute, and she did not come back to play small.
Written with Stacey Kelleher, “Redirected” is built around a mantra Toscano has carried with her for years — “Rejection is God’s protection.” The result is less a breakup song and more a reframing of every closed door she’s ever stared at. “What I thought was loss was love, just undetected,” she sings, and if that lyric doesn’t live rent-free in your head by the second chorus, check your pulse.
“‘Redirected’ was born from a phrase I’ve repeated to myself for years… ‘Rejection is God’s protection,'” Toscano explains. “Every time something I deeply wanted and prayed for didn’t work out, I would tell myself it was simply redirection… a way to soothe my soul and trust there was something greater ahead. Writing this song with Stacey Kelleher made me realize that what I thought was self-comfort was actually faith. The closed doors, heartbreak, and unanswered prayers weren’t setbacks at all… they were part of the plan all along.”
If you’ve only known Toscano from her star-making run on Season 10 of American Idol — where her shocking early elimination is still cited as one of the show’s most infamous “wait, WHAT?” moments — “Redirected” is the perfect reintroduction. Since Idol, she’s toured the world with Jennifer Lopez (including the All I Have Las Vegas residency), lent her voice to projects with David Foster and Andrea Bocelli, topped the holiday charts with 2021’s Christmas With You, and dropped her debut full-length of originals, I’m Good, in 2022 — a record that notably featured a collaboration with Usher. Not a bad consolation prize for an “early exit.”
With a voice regularly mentioned in the same breath as Mariah Carey, Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, and Etta James, Toscano has never had a problem hitting the notes. What makes “Redirected” land is the emotional geography underneath them — the sound of an artist who has lived the lyric and is finally ready to tell you about it. She’s already back in the studio working on her next body of work, and if this single is the thesis statement, the album should be worth clearing your calendar for.
