Benjamin Tod Unleashes Shooter Jennings-Produced Full Band Version of Fan-Favorite “Wyoming”

Benjamin Tod has gone back to the well — and this time, he brought the whole band. The Lost Dog Street Band frontman and modern-day cult-classic troubadour has released a brand-new, full-band studio version of fan-favorite “Wyoming,” cut at Hollywood’s legendary Sunset Sound Studio with living-legend producer Shooter Jennings behind the boards.

Originally the penultimate track on 2022’s Songs I Swore I’d Never Sing, “Wyoming” has long resonated with Tod’s devoted following as a quiet, fingerpicked gut-punch. But in the waning days of his California sessions, Tod decided to see what Jennings and an A-team session crew could do with a bigger, two-stepping arrangement — and the result is a cut that trades intimacy for sheer power without losing the song’s lonesome heart.

“I cut this full band version simply for the fans to enjoy the song in a larger sound format,” Tod says. “I know plenty of folks will prefer the solo version forever, but I thoroughly enjoy the power behind this cut.”

The real curveball? A wild-card guest appearance from comedian Uncle Lazer, who — in a fact that may surprise even his most dedicated fans — happens to be a phenomenal harmonica player. “So I talked him into coming into the studio,” Tod recalls. That mournful harmonica slips in just ahead of the final verse, grounding the band’s tight-toleranced groove and setting up Tod’s closing lyrical haymaker.

“He was nervous, which was funny to see from a guy that tells outrageous, self-deprecating tales on some of the biggest stages in the comedy world on a nightly basis,” Tod laughs. “I guess it meant this was important to him, and the entire experience was special, to say the least.”

The release lands in the middle of a massive summer-into-fall tour for Benjamin Tod & Lost Dog Street Band, who kicked off the summer leg last night at Minneapolis’s famed First Avenue. The run rolls through Milwaukee tonight, Chicago tomorrow, and then heads West for the rest of July before a sprawling October trek across the East Coast and South.
