David Nail Teams Up With Lori McKenna on Tender New Single “Riverbank” — “Flowers” LP Drops August 21

David Nail has never been shy about laying his heart on the table, but his new single “Riverbank” might be the most unguarded moment of his career. Out now, the song pairs the 3x platinum Missouri-born singer-songwriter with GRAMMY-winning tunesmith Lori McKenna — a longtime creative kindred spirit — for a quietly stunning meditation on enduring love.

Co-written by Nail, McKenna, and producer Anderson East, “Riverbank” arrives as the fourth preview from Nail’s forthcoming album Flowers, his first full-length release in over a decade, due August 21.

Written as a tribute to his wife, Catherine, “Riverbank” trades the big country gestures of Nail’s radio-era catalog for something softer, slower, and infinitely more intimate. The chorus says it all:

“If life was a riverbank / Mine would take the shape of you / Only spelling out your name / Always moving night and day / Even when the years wash it away / My love remains.”

For an artist whose resume includes No. 1 hits like “Let It Rain” and “Whatever She’s Got,” Nail is quick to point out that this one hits different.

“People always ask, ‘What’s your favorite song?’ I’ve honestly never had one, or at least beyond a week or two — they all mean so much,” Nail shared. “But this song came at a time in my life when a lot had changed, both personally and professionally. I’d changed as a man, and my life had changed, and with that, I began to think about what I’ve done and what I still hope to do. If I’m ever remembered for anything, I hope it’s this song.”

McKenna, whose fingerprints have graced some of modern country’s most heartfelt moments, echoed the sentiment: “This song is so special to me. Special because I got to write it with David and Anderson — who I love and respect so much — but also because the song was such a big presence in the room that night.”

Early reviews are already lining up behind it. Music Row Magazine’s Robert K. Oermann called it “soothing, sensuous and soft,” noting that the “ballad of enduring love lingers long after the final notes echo away.”

“Riverbank” follows a string of critically embraced 2026 singles — “The Crown,” “Fare Thee Well,” and “She Knows” — all pointing toward Flowers as the most personal and artistically assured chapter of Nail’s career. Having stepped into a more independent lane in recent years, Nail has prioritized honesty over expectation, and the results speak for themselves.

Fans can catch Nail in person this fall as he continues his acclaimed Down To The Studs acoustic tour — a stripped-back run of listening rooms and small theaters built around just a guitar, a voice, and the stories behind the songs. He’ll also join GRAMMY-nominated Will Hoge for a run of co-bill dates stretching into December across the South and Midwest.

Flowers arrives August 21. If “Riverbank” is any indication, it’s going to be the one worth remembering.
