Baby Snakes & The Electric Co. Debut With “Dark Horse” — Rock ‘n’ Roll Rebuilt From the Fire

Some records are made with hands. “Dark Horse,” the debut single from Baby Snakes & The Electric Co., was made with everything else — grit, stubbornness, a rubber-tipped stylus, and a melody hummed into a phone from the shower minutes before the session began. That’s the sort of origin story you get when the artist behind the microphone is Jeff Saenz, the Dallas producer and Modern Electric Sound Recorders founder who, after years of helping other artists tell their stories, has finally stepped into the spotlight to tell his own.

Out now ahead of the full-length “Ouroboros” (October 23 via Spaceflight Records), “Dark Horse” is the kind of song that doesn’t bother tiptoeing. It opens the door and kicks it off the hinges. Written on day one, tracked on day two, and dressed up with little more than tambourine and harmonies on day three, it’s a live-in-studio anthem that trades studio polish for the kind of arena-rock punch you can feel in your sternum. If you’ve been missing the sound of a band actually breathing together in a room, this is your reminder that the format still works.

“This song is about hitting the gas through tragedy, because sometimes the only way out is through,” Saenz says. “Built from the fire you find yourself in after the smoke clears, it’s the moment you look your person in the eye and decide: are we in this together? The answer is an emphatic yes.”

That emotional weight isn’t marketing copy — it’s lived in. On June 1, 2021, Saenz was struck by nearly 8,000 volts of electricity in his own yard. He survived, but lost his left hand and right arm, and with them, every conventional path back to the instruments he’d built a life around: guitar, bass, drums, keys. The man who produced records for Leon Bridges, Paul Cauthen, Joshua Ray Walker, and the Vandoliers suddenly had to answer the question every lifelong musician dreads: now what?

The answer, over the course of 2025 — the Chinese Zodiac’s Year of the Snake, and Saenz’s own birth sign — became “Ouroboros,” a 12-song record written one song per month, chronologically, each tune penned in a day and tracked the next. It’s a concept album only in the sense that life itself is a concept album: full of storms, dedications, mental-health reckonings, and the occasional clearing in the trees. “Dark Horse” sits at track two, the moment the record decides it’s going to keep moving no matter what.

Atwood Magazine, who premiered the single, nailed it: “Saenz writes with the force of a man spilling his raw self into song, wearing his heart on his sleeve while the band builds around him in surging waves of grit and grace.” It’s rock ‘n’ roll as an act of will — unfinished, complicated, and beautifully alive.
