Tokyo’s reigning Harajuku-core queens HANABIE. are back, and this time they’ve got a controller in one hand and a breakdown in the other. The all-girl quartet just dropped their explosive new single “Life Is Short, O Brave Girl” via Sony Music Japan — the official opening theme for the upcoming anime series Young Ladies Don’t Play Fighting Games, streaming soon on Crunchyroll.

The pairing feels almost too perfect. Based on the popular manga, Young Ladies Don’t Play Fighting Games follows Mitsuki Aya, a student at the prestigious Girls’ Academy who discovers that her poised, idolized classmate is secretly a hardcore, trash-talking fighting-game fanatic. Despite the academy’s strict ban on gaming, the two forge an unlikely bond through button-mashing rivalry and blossoming friendship — a story about dedication, self-expression, and refusing to hide who you really are.

That last part hits especially close to home for HANABIE., who formed during their own all-girls high school days back in 2015. “Since the anime is set at an all-girls school, we felt a strong connection to the story,” the band shared. “We could really relate to the passion and dedication the characters have for something they love. We’re huge fans of anime and video games ourselves, so it’s a real honor to be involved with such a wonderful series.”

Vocalist Yukina dove headfirst into the source material before writing a single lyric. “I read the original work and immersed myself completely in its world while writing the song. I included words that fans will hopefully recognize and think, ‘Oh!’ when they hear them. I also reflected on my own youth — the things our faculty advisor said to us when we were passionately playing in a band while being obsessed with heavy music, and the rebellious spirit I felt during those days. I hope this song becomes one that overflows with energy for anyone who is passionately devoted to something.”

Guitarist and vocalist Matsuri echoed that sentiment, explaining that the goal wasn’t to blend HANABIE.’s world neatly into the anime’s — it was to let them collide. “We focused on finding the best way for the passion and energy of both to collide,” she said. Bassist Hettsu leaned into groove and momentum to capture “the tension of battle scenes, the exhilarating feeling of youth, and the graceful elegance of young ladies.” And drummer Chika teased a specific highlight worth listening for: “During the chorus, I strike the China cymbal four times in sync with the lyrics, ‘MATCH UP!! SMASH UP!!'”

HANABIE. have been on a global tear. Their breakout single “Pardon Me, I Have To Go Now” has racked up over 12 million YouTube views and 5.4 million on TikTok. They dropped their EP Bucchigiri Tokyo in December 2024, followed by HOT TOPIC in January 2026. In August 2024, they made history as the first Japanese women to perform on the main stage at Lollapalooza in Chicago, and this past March they wrapped their first North American headlining tour.
