Legendary British singer-songwriter Robyn Hitchcock has done it again. The famously prolific tunesmith just shared “Yesterday’s Rain,” the latest taste of his eagerly anticipated 25th studio album, The Confuser, arriving Friday, July 24 via Tiny Ghost Records. Pre-orders are available now.

The accompanying music video — filmed poolside in sun-baked Los Angeles — premieres today and comes courtesy of Emmy Award-winning comedy writer Scott Jacobson (Bob’s Burgers, The Daily Show), who has previously helmed clips for The National, Dinosaur Jr., Nick Lowe, Superchunk, and Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks. If that pedigree wasn’t enough, the video features a scene-stealing cast of comedy heavyweights including Maria Bamford, Eugene Mirman, and David Herman.

“Yesterday’s rain falls on tomorrow’s parade,” Hitchcock muses on the track’s central lyric. “The sins of the past call the shots for the future. And on the way, you get the flag, the lilac tomb, and the crocodile on skis. It’s all good! More classic Brit-rock, played as only Americans can.”

“Yesterday’s Rain” follows previously released singles “How To Feel Alright,” “My Dead Astronaut,” and the album’s opening salvo “I Am This Thing” — all of which set the stage for Hitchcock’s first collection of all-new original material in nearly four years.

Recorded in Hitchcock’s longtime home base of Nashville by producers Brad Jones (Josh Rouse, Chuck Prophet) and Jordan Lehning (Kacey Musgraves, Rodney Crowell), The Confuser boasts a killer Music City rhythm section featuring electric guitarist Jeremy Fetzer (Steelism, Lambchop), bassist Todd Bolden, and drummer Eric Slick (Dr. Dog, Adrian Belew, Taylor Swift). Special guests include Gillian Welch, who contributes vocals to “Ghost in Sunlight,” and Kimberley Rew — Hitchcock’s co-conspirator from The Soft Boys — who adds additional guitar to four tracks.

Across ten songs, The Confuser traverses the familiar Hitchcock terrain fans have come to cherish: the significance of love, the mysteries of the cosmos, and every strange, beautiful accident in between. From the skewed rock of “My Dead Astronaut” to the jaunty music hall psychedelia of album-closer “Wasted,” the record carries the accrued wisdom of a veteran songwriter still delivering with the vigor of someone with everything to prove.

“One of my roles has been to keep a certain kind of music alive,” Hitchcock reflects. “I didn’t invent this field of music, but I’ve perpetuated it. It was simply a certain kind of sound and a certain kind of feeling that was in those records made between 1965 and 1968, which are now seen as the Big Bang of classic rock. I’ve just kept that approach to music alive — verse, chorus, middle eight, harmonies, guitar solos, and free-range lyrics. I’m very lucky to be able to do this.”
