Just when you thought your summer playlist was locked in, Sleep Theory kicked the door open with a three-song care package designed to soundtrack every heartbreak, hangover, and highway drive for the rest of the season.

Today, the Memphis-bred alt-rock outfit — vocalist Cullen Moore, guitarist Daniel Pruitt, bassist Paolo Vergara, and drummer Ben Pruitt — surprise-released their new covers EP, (E)motional (S)upport (C)are (P)ackage, via Epitaph Records. The three-track collection bundles their already-beloved studio takes on NSYNC’s “Bye Bye Bye” and Paramore’s “My Heart” with a brand new, holiday-timed reimagining of Taylor Swift’s “Cruel Summer.”

And yes, it’s exactly as good as it sounds on paper.

Sleep Theory’s version of “Cruel Summer” strips away the shimmering synth-pop sheen of the original and rebuilds it in their own image — moody, muscular, and dripping with the kind of atmospheric groove that has made the band one of modern rock’s fastest-rising acts. Moore’s vocal delivery leans into the ache Swift buried under all those hooks, while the rhythm section turns the chorus into something that hits like a summer thunderstorm rolling in over the interstate. It is, to borrow a phrase, devastating in the best possible way.

The EP arrives on the heels of a genuinely wild run for Sleep Theory. The band has racked up 875 million catalog streams on the strength of just one album and one EP, scored their third No. 1 at Rock Radio, took home Best New Rock Artist at the iHeart Radio Awards, and sold out their debut European headline tour along with two North American headline runs.
