Just when you thought bluegrass tradition was locked away in a dusty catalog somewhere, The Larry Stephenson Band kicks the door wide open again. Fresh off the chart-topping success of their Turnberry Records debut “You Made It Right,” the band is back with a heartfelt reimagining of the beloved Osborne Brothers classic “Lizzie Lou.” Written by the legendary songwriting duo Boudleaux and Felice Bryant, the track is available to bluegrass radio now via Get It Played, with a full digital release rolling out July 10th.

If you’re new to Larry Stephenson’s world, here’s the quick tour: since forming his band in 1989, Stephenson has become one of bluegrass music’s most respected tenors and a devoted torchbearer for traditional sound. More than four decades in, he’s still finding ways to honor the roots of the genre while keeping every note feeling alive and current. “Lizzie Lou” is a perfect example — familiar enough to make longtime fans smile, but sharp and vibrant enough to pull in a new generation of listeners.

The backstory here is almost too good not to share. According to Stephenson, the late Sonny Osborne himself once suggested he record “Lizzie Lou” — a suggestion that, in true musician fashion, sat on the back burner for years. “Sorry, Sonny!” Stephenson joked in the announcement, before adding that he believes Osborne would approve of the new version, particularly Derek Vaden’s stellar banjo work. Consider this one a long-overdue thank-you card, delivered in three-part harmony.

Musically, the track is exactly what you’d hope for from this lineup. Larry Stephenson takes the lead on vocals and mandolin, Derek Vaden delivers harmony vocals and that show-stealing banjo, Jimmy Haynes lays down the guitar work, and Matt Wright anchors it all with bass and harmony vocals. It was produced by The Larry Stephenson Band and Ben Surratt, with Keith Barnacastle serving as executive producer. Recorded and mixed at Ben’s Place Studio in Nashville and mastered by Alex McCollough at True East Mastering, the whole thing sounds as warm and lived-in as a front-porch pick.
