Cue the bells, dust off your best summer suit, and RSVP immediately — indie pop duo Chess Club have officially crashed the reception with their irresistible new single, “Wedding of the Year.” Equal parts feel-good romance anthem and stealth Fourth of July banger, the track is a giddy, funk-tinged love letter to that one perfect summer ceremony we’ve all either attended, cried at, or dreamt about.

The self-proclaimed “Fab Two” — Champagne (Adam Chase, drums) and Paris (Danny Darress, keys/vocals) — set out to write the quintessential wedding song, and, reader, they nailed the bouquet toss. “When we were going through our idea list, this one stood out and we set out to compose the perfect wedding song,” the duo explain. “All of the tonal qualities are based on the quintessential wedding experience… bells, strings, guitars, piano.”

Sonically, “Wedding of the Year” pulls from the sleek indie pop playbook (think The 1975 crossed with a champagne toast), grounded by delicate string arrangements, a pulsing piano heartbeat, and a joyful funk guitar courtesy of session ace Mark Lettieri (The Fearless Flyers). The showstopper? A soaring, “(I’ve Had) The Time of My Life”-inspired saxophone solo from none other than John Waugh of The 1975. It’s the musical equivalent of a slow-motion first dance under string lights.

The accompanying visual — shot by cinematographer Mike Gentilini Jr. (The Righteous Gemstones, The Hunting Wives) and written and directed by Chess Club’s own Champagne — follows Paris on the happiest, messiest day of his life. It plays out with the comedic timing of a great sitcom and the emotional beats of a rom-com, leaning into the awkward, unexpected, and often inconvenient ways love actually shows up. “The story plays out the way a sitcom or romantic comedy could allow the characters to do the things that many people think about but could never act upon,” Chase adds.

Formed in 2023 during what the band now lovingly refers to as their “six song day,” Chess Club have quickly built a reputation for pairing serious pop craftsmanship with a wickedly playful sense of humor. Their forthcoming debut record boasts a guest list more stacked than the wedding party itself, with collaborations from GaTa (DAVE), Isaiah Sharkey (D’Angelo’s Vanguard), Yesseh Furaha-Ali (Jonas Brothers), Cory Wong (Vulfpeck), and the aforementioned John Waugh.

“Wedding of the Year” is more than just a snapshot of one perfect summer ceremony — it’s a song for every season, every sparkler-lit backyard, and every “will they, won’t they” moment in between.
