Portuguese gothic metal legends Moonspell are howling at the moon once again. Just days before the release of their highly anticipated new studio album Far From God, the band have unveiled a stunning lyric video for the latest single, “The Great Wolf in the Sky” — a sweeping, atmospheric anthem that captures everything that has made Moonspell one of the most enduring forces in gothic metal for over three decades.

Built on expansive keyboards, harmonized guitars, and a soul-stirring guest appearance by Alicia Nuhr on strings, “The Great Wolf in the Sky” is Moonspell at their most cinematic. The track slowly unfurls into an epic, liberating chorus that feels like taking flight into the night sky — which, according to frontman Fernando Ribeiro, is exactly the point.

“It’s a shameless ode to the great gig in the sky and also a return for us to a theme that is very dear to us: Wolves,” Ribeiro shares. “This is one of my favorite songs ever for Moonspell. The keyboards sound like a melancholic wolf howling throughout the progress of the song into its epic chorus. It tells the story of Moonspell, of the wolves who crossed our paths and went away from the pack, due to life circumstances or the inevitability of death. It bridges the many times of Moonspell — past, present, and future.” Ribeiro also notes that the song is dedicated to a fan and friend who tragically passed away before hearing the new album.

Five years in the making, Far From God is being hailed as a rebirth for the band — darker, sharper, and emotionally unfiltered. Rather than chasing trends, Moonspell have doubled down on identity, delivering a work that revels in Baudelairian love, existential guilt, Christ-like resurrections, and the quiet nobility of creatures of the night. Vampires, werewolves, and sacred symbolism aren’t escapism here — they’re vehicles for genuine, unfiltered dark emotion.

Produced by the always-in-demand Jaime Gomez Arellano (Paradise Lost, Sólstafir, Ghost), Far From God shines like a black diamond: luminous yet shadowed, reconnecting with the darker spirit of Moonspell’s classic era while sounding powerfully contemporary. Early praise has been overwhelming, with Powerplay Magazine calling it “a masterpiece of haunting ambience” (9/10) and Rocks Magazine dubbing it “one of their best albums ever” (8/10). Metal Hammer Spain went even further, declaring, “Moonspell is art… A masterpiece!”

The critics aren’t wrong. This might just be Moonspell’s 21st century Irreligious — a gothic metal hallelujah that saves the genre from boredom and predictability.
