After nearly three years of radio silence, Los Angeles garage rock lifers The Paranoyds are finally back — and they didn’t come home empty-handed. The band’s brand-new EP, Late Nighter, is out today via Third Man Records, and it might just be the most confident, most cohesive thing they’ve ever put to tape.

The 4-song set was produced in part by none other than Jamie Hince of The Kills, who also lends additional guitar to the EP’s lead single, “Tracy Don’t.” According to the band, the whole project traces back to a vanity plate — L8 NYTR — and a summer spent decamping to Hince’s home studio with the loose ambition of writing a song a day.

“We spent most of August going to Jamie’s home studio with the goal of writing a song a day,” the band explained. “We eventually recorded our demos with him later that November. Daylight savings comes in, and it gets dark so early — perhaps the depth and grit that our summertime demos needed? We would leave the sessions and come back the next day to find that Jamie had worked total studio magic on the tracks after we left. He was our late nighter, el capitán, guiding everything to exactly where it needed to be.”

You can hear that late-night alchemy all over the record. Across four tracks — “Tracy Don’t,” “Girls Like Me,” “Paint Thinner,” and “DNA” — The Paranoyds sharpen the collage of groovy R&B, lo-fi punk, fuzz-pop, and garage rock they’ve been quietly perfecting since their 2022 Third Man debut Talk Talk Talk. Longtime collaborator Joo Joo Ashworth (Froth) also returns, contributing additional guitar to “Girls Like Me.”

The story of The Paranoyds is, at this point, the stuff of indie rock lore. Keyboardist/vocalist Laila Hashemi and guitarist/vocalist Lexi Funston have known each other since preschool. When bassist/vocalist Staz Lindes entered the picture in ninth grade, she slotted into the “package deal” like she’d always been there. Drummer David Ruiz joined in 2015 and completed the lineup that’s been tearing up stages across North America and Europe ever since — sharing bills with Death Valley Girls, Bleached, and L.A. WITCH along the way.

The band celebrated the release with a hometown show last night at Permanent Records Roadhouse in Los Angeles, and they’re not slowing down anytime soon. Late Nighter is being backed by a summer’s worth of tour dates, including a SoCal triple-bill with Doll Riot and Trash Day at San Diego’s Soda Bar on July 30, and shows stretching from Reno and Oakland all the way to Kingston, New Brunswick, and Ridgewood, NY in August.
