San Antonio hard rock outfit Kingdom Collapse just did what only the boldest rock bands dare to do: they took a beloved pop smash, cranked the gain to eleven, and turned it into a full-blown moshpit anthem. Their high-voltage cover of Natasha Bedingfield’s 2004 multiplatinum staple “Unwritten” is out now, and it hits with the kind of arena-sized swagger that makes you want to sprint through a brick wall while pumping your fist.

The track is the latest single lifted from the band’s debut full-length, Survivor, arriving October 30 via Mascot Records. It follows the previously released title track “Survivor” and the cathartic “Watch You Bleed” — two songs that make it clear this isn’t a band interested in half-measures. Kingdom Collapse trade in the kind of anthemic, hook-drenched heavy rock that turns personal wreckage into communal catharsis, and “Unwritten” fits their mission statement almost too perfectly.

Frontman Jonathan Norris explains why the song stuck with him for two decades before finally getting the Kingdom Collapse treatment: “I remember first hearing ‘Unwritten’ and I had to be 11 or 12 at the time. That song got stuck in my head and never left. It’s an anthem for embracing life and embracing yourself, so the message fits perfectly with what we do. Throw a big wall of rhythm guitars on that chorus and there you have it.” Turns out “a big wall of rhythm guitars” was the missing ingredient all along. Who knew?

The empowerment message at the heart of “Unwritten” — release your inhibitions, feel the rain on your skin, no one else can feel it for you — lands even harder when it’s screamed over a battering ram of distortion. That thematic through-line is central to who Kingdom Collapse are. Formed out of the lifelong friendship between Norris and bassist Aaron Smith, the band was forged in the aftermath of real loss and channels that history into music built to help listeners keep going.

Fans can catch the band’s kinetic live show all summer long. Kingdom Collapse are hitting major festivals including Upheaval Festival in Grand Rapids and Rock Fest in Cadott, then rolling through the Midwest, Northeast, and South on tour with Royale Lynn in July before joining Of Virtue and Savage Hands throughout August. A September run keeps the momentum rolling straight into Survivor’s release week.
