Just when you thought bluegrass had run out of ways to make you ache in a barn-dance kind of way, Brad Kaylor & Mineral Bluff Revue show up with “Oh, Athena,” a fresh cut of high-lonesome regret dropping on all digital platforms July 3rd via Huckleberry Records.

Following their well-received debut single “My Last Name,” the Nashville-based outfit is doubling down on the sound that’s already earning them attention: traditional bluegrass bones wrapped around contemporary songwriting that actually has something to say. “Oh, Athena” is the kind of tune that belongs on a back porch at dusk — a man haunted by the love he let walk out the door, pleading to a woman who’s likely long past listening. It’s remorse, longing, and the sting of “what if” set to fiddle and banjo, and it hits exactly where it’s supposed to.

Penned by guitarist Dylan Smith, the song landed with the band the moment they heard it. “Words can’t explain what a blast it was to record ‘Oh, Athena’ that I wrote,” Smith says. “‘Oh, Athena’ is a good ole bluegrass heartbreak tune written from the perspective of a man that’s desperately pleading to a woman! It’s hard not to be happy about a sad song, and I couldn’t be happier with the outcome of this recording.”

Anchored by Kaylor’s expressive lead vocal and bass, the track features Kenneth Rymer on harmony vocal and mandolin, Chris Pope on harmony vocal, Smith on guitar, Hayden Bramlett on banjo, and the ever-tasteful Ron Stewart on fiddle. Produced by Danny Roberts and recorded, mixed, and mastered by Rickey Wasson at Rick’s Main Street Studio in Clay City, KY, the recording has that unmistakable warmth of a room full of players who actually know what they’re doing.
