Get ready, Milwaukee — the folk-rock institution that soundtracked your last road trip, your first heartbreak, and (thanks to a certain pink blockbuster) an entirely new generation’s coming-of-age moment is heading to the Pabst Theater. Indigo Girls, the Grammy-winning duo of Emily Saliers and Amy Ray, will play the historic downtown venue on Monday, October 19, 2026, with doors at 6:00 PM and the show kicking off at 7:00 PM.

Four decades. Sixteen studio albums. More than 15 million records sold. And yet, somehow, Indigo Girls still describe themselves as “a bar band at heart.” That’s the sort of grounded, unpretentious ethos that’s made Saliers and Ray a north star for queer artists in the mainstream ever since their 1988 Epic Records debut turned “Closer to Fine” and “Kid Fears” into generational anthems. Six consecutive Gold- and Platinum-certified albums followed, and the duo never stopped evolving — their most recent record, Look Long, reunited them with their strongest backing band to date for a heartfelt, eclectic set of songs that sounds every bit as urgent as their early club shows in Atlanta.

Of course, Indigo Girls have also had one of the more delightful late-career renaissance moments in recent memory. “Closer to Fine” featured prominently in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie, introducing their catalog to a whole new generation of listeners who now belt every word from the passenger seat. Their 2024 documentary Indigo Girls: It’s Only Life After All — a New York Times Critic’s Pick that premiered opening night at Sundance before hitting SXSW, Tribeca, Hot Docs, and eventually Netflix — offered a soulful 40-year retrospective built from home movies and raw archive footage. And then there’s Glitter & Doom, the 2023 jukebox musical from director Tom Gustafson that reimagines classic Indigo Girls songs with a star-studded queer cast including Lea DeLaria, Tig Notaro, Kate Pierson, and Peppermint, plus a cameo from Amy and Emily themselves.

Beyond the music, Saliers and Ray have spent their careers as committed, uncompromising activists — working on racial justice and reproductive rights through Project Say Something, immigration reform via El Refugio, LGBTQ advocacy, childhood literacy through the Imagination Library, death penalty reform, and Native American rights with First Peoples Fund. The receipts are long, and the work is ongoing.

But the real magic — the reason this show is worth clearing your calendar for — happens the moment those first harmonies land. Rolling Stone once called Indigo Girls “ideal duet partners,” but anyone who’s been to a live show knows it’s not really a duet at all.
