Karina Rykman is checking back in — and she’s brought a stolen sailboat, a duffel bag of buried cash, and the summer’s most disarmingly cool bass line with her.

The New York City-born singer-songwriter-bassist has officially announced her long-awaited sophomore album, Late Checkout, due Friday, September 25 via Karina Rykman/High Rotation Records. Pre-orders and pre-saves are live now. The follow-up to 2023’s acclaimed debut Joyride was recorded with longtime collaborator and producer Gabe Monro at Trey Anastasio’s The Barn in Westford, VT and at LCD Soundsystem’s DFA Studios in New York — a pair of rooms that go a long way toward explaining the record’s blend of jammy warmth and sleek, downtown groove.

To kick the doors open, Rykman has shared the album’s first single, “Easy, Rider,” along with an official music video. Built around a thick, unhurried bass groove and washed in reverb-soaked guitar, the track is a cinematic, sun-drenched ride down the California coast — a “fictionalized story about a NorCal criminal and their escape,” as Rykman puts it, complete with buried cash in the hills, stolen sailboats pushed to 30 knots, and bombs defused by cutting the right wire. It’s her first real swing at pure narrative fiction, and it lands with the effortless cool of a song that already knows it’s a summer bop.

“‘Easy, Rider’ is a summer bop,” Rykman says. “The propulsive bass line, the reverb-drenched guitar chords, the unbothered vocal vibe…I love this tune. It was written in a windowless basement studio with my producer, Gabe Monro, and then brought to Adam November and Chris Corsico (my band), where we fleshed out the sections together. It was a collaborative triumph.”

Late Checkout expands Rykman’s kaleidoscopic universe with a new focus on lyrical storytelling and the road-tested energy of her live band — guitarist/looper wizard Adam November and drummer Chris Corsico, plus a newly enlarged lineup. Across 12 tracks, the record moves from the dreamy shimmer of “Shoegaze Summer” and the emotional grind-anthem “Riverside Drive” to the tender “Where You At?” and the sleek darkwave of “Balcony,” which delivers what might be the album’s mission statement: “The destination is not our concern / This is the journey: let it burn.”

Rykman will celebrate the album with a hometown record-release show at New York City’s Webster Hall on September 25, then hit the road through December. Highlights include a two-night stand at Garcia’s Chicago (October 8–9) and her debut headline set at the historic Troubadour in West Hollywood (November 6).
