Skydance Sports Acquires Ice Cube’s “Are They Gone Yet?” — Nick Persons Returns as a Grandpa

Nick Persons is back — and this time, he’s a grandpa.

Skydance Sports, the freshly minted division of Paramount Skydance born out of the $8 billion Skydance–Paramount Global mega-merger completed in August 2025, has officially acquired Are They Gone Yet?, the third chapter in Ice Cube’s beloved Are We There Yet? franchise. Yes, the same franchise that turned road-trip chaos into a $156 million worldwide phenomenon is roaring back — with Cube reprising his role as Nick Persons and Nia Long returning as Suzanne Kingston, the love interest who started this whole mess back in 2005.

The twist this time? Nick isn’t just dealing with kids. He’s dealing with grandkids. Time, as Cube himself put it, flies.

“We built something special with this franchise. Audiences grew up with Nick Persons, and now Nick’s got grandkids,” Ice Cube said in the announcement. “Partnering with Skydance to bring this story to a new generation is exactly the kind of move CubeVision was built for, and I am excited for the new partnership.”

A Franchise That Refuses to Slow Down

The original Are We There Yet? opened at #1 at the domestic box office in 2005, grossing $97.9 million worldwide on a modest $20–32 million budget. Its 2007 sequel Are We Done Yet? tacked on another $58.3 million, and the TBS sitcom spinoff starring Terry Crews ran a staggering 100 episodes from 2010 to 2013 — a rare four-season victory lap for a cable family comedy.

In other words: this is one of the most durable family comedy IPs of the 21st century, and Skydance Sports just added it to a portfolio that already spans theatrical film, premium television, Paramount+, and live sports rights.

Who’s Behind the Camera

Are They Gone Yet? is produced by Broken Road Productions and CubeVision, with Ice Cube, Todd Garner, and Jeff Kwatinetz producing. The script comes from Chris Hazzard and Mike Fontana, with Ben Hurwitz and Lauren Gennawey serving as executive producers. Garner — the powerhouse behind Mortal Kombat, Vacation Friends, and the upcoming Alan Ritchson–Owen Wilson film Runner — knows a thing or two about turning commercial concepts into franchise gold.

More Than a Movie Star

While Cube is gearing up to reprise one of his most bankable roles, he’s also continuing to dominate the music side of his multi-hyphenate empire. His latest album Man Up, released via Lench Mob Records/Hitmaker Distribution, is a follow-up to Man Down and doubles down on the unflinching lyricism and sharp social commentary that have kept him one of hip-hop’s most respected truth-tellers for over three decades.
