Twenty years after Comatose reshaped their career and helped soundtrack a generation of rock fans, Skillet are proving they still have plenty of fight left in them. The 23x-platinum band have announced a blistering new single, “Scream,” arriving July 10, along with a massive fall headline run: the “Comatose: 20 Years, Still Screaming Tour,” produced by Live Nation.

“Scream” marks the first taste of a new era for Skillet, with more music expected later this year. To make it, frontman John Cooper and company went back to Memphis and reunited with a producer who knew the band before they’d ever cut a record. “Life has taken some great turns, but it’s also taken some painful turns,” Cooper says. “Now we’re here, and we still have more of a story to tell. The music kept getting heavier, and I said, ‘We’ve got to go all-in.'”

They meant it. “Scream” opens with a clean electric guitar that gets swallowed by a wave of crushing distortion before Cooper delivers a chorus built for arenas and mosh pits alike: “I wanna scream. I wanna break something beautiful.” Ominous keys, a snapping beat, and a palm-muted bridge laced with glitchy electronics push the track into some of the heaviest territory the band has touched in years.

Thematically, the song reads like a signal flare for anyone burned out on doomscrolling. “I don’t think I’m the only one who’s noticing the volatility of the world and how social media is a cesspool where people are constantly yelling at each other,” Cooper explains. “It’s not helping anyone’s mental health. In this landscape, it’s easy to feel like nothing matters. ‘Scream’ is about wanting your life to matter when the world feels chaotic and overwhelming.”

The single lands as Skillet ride one of the biggest waves of their career. Their 6x-platinum monster “Monster” (pun very much intended) recently crossed 4 billion global streams, joined Spotify’s Billions Club, and cemented itself as one of the most-streamed rock songs of all time — still the only track from a Christian artist to clear a billion streams on the platform. That milestone follows a completely sold-out European headline tour that moved 90,000+ tickets across 23 cities and broke venue records at rooms like Zenith Paris.

Now, the “Comatose: 20 Years, Still Screaming Tour” turns the spotlight back on the 2006 record that changed everything for them. For the first time, Skillet will dedicate a large portion of each night to songs from Comatose — some road-tested a thousand times over, others never before performed live — before rolling through the rest of their catalog.

“When we released our 2006 album, Comatose, we all had a feeling that we were making something special,” Cooper recalls. “What we didn’t know is that the album would change the trajectory of the band’s career. It defined our sound, our message, and propelled the band into a much bigger level of notoriety. At every show, someone tells me that this record helped them through the darkest times of their life. That is why we wanted to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Comatose by doing something we have never done. We are excited to perform them alongside our catalog on this once in a lifetime tour.”
