student 1 Drops Raw, Eccentric Fourth Album ‘truant’ — Watch “idcicantbeherefortoolong” and Catch Him on Tour with Ghais Guevara
Minneapolis-based artist and producer student 1 has never been one to color inside the lines, and his fourth full-length, truant, is proof he’s still gleefully coloring somewhere off the page. Out now, the twelve-track record is a groovy, off-kilter meditation on absence — the mental, emotional and physical kind — and the messy work of finding your way back to something that resembles joy.
Written, mixed and mastered entirely by student 1 (with co-production from YUSF, LEEszn, and dog owner man), truant is an unusually candid document of a creative pulling himself out of a funk in real time. It’s an album about aimlessness, distraction, addiction and avoidance, and how those states quietly shape the person you end up being. It’s also, in student 1’s own words, colored by the loss of his father during the making of the record — a weight the album carries without ever letting it flatten the mood.
“It’s inspired by the problems these moments create and have created (as well as the desire to solve them), the headspace I was in, drugs, and not being able to articulate important feelings and thoughts,” he shares.
Alongside the album drops “idcicantbeherefortoolong,” a track built around cheeky, unserious lines that came together fast — a one-song-a-day exercise that turned into one of his personal favorites on the project. “It’s called ‘idcicantbeherefortoolong’ because this exercise was difficult for me, and I had to learn how to not care so much in order to complete the exercise,” he explains. The accompanying visual, directed and edited by Erik Astle, is a chaotic day-in-the-life romp featuring a cameo from dog owner man as his boss, and — per Astle — an opening shot that involved literally hanging student 1 upside down. Elsewhere, truant swings between the gossamer funk of lead single “kevinkevinkevin” (featuring fellow Minneapolis artist Demon Marcus, and named for Tame Impala’s Kevin Parker), the frenetic self-inventory of closer “pissing myself,” and the smeared, dreamlike textures of tracks like “predict/infer” and “memberberries.” It’s the sound of an artist who has spent a decade quietly building a catalog — from 2018’s drag to 2019’s UPPRCLSSMN (home to the Tierra Whack collab “YIN/YANG”) to 2022’s Alex Tumay-mixed OFFTHEDUST! — and who now sounds fully at ease letting the seams show.
The official release show goes down tonight at Chicago’s Bookclub with punk band Champions and hip-hop artist CRASHprez, kicking off a summer U.S. run with Philadelphia rapper Ghais Guevara that includes Los Angeles, New York, Nashville, three Texas stops and more, with new dates added.

Stream truant, catch the “idcicantbeherefortoolong” video, and grab tickets before this tour rolls through your city — student 1 is one of the underground’s most quietly essential voices, and truant is the album that should stop him being underground for much longer.
