The two singer-songwriters have teamed up for “Damned If I Stay,” a heartbreak-soaked new track from Jennings’ latest album, Baptized By Fire, out now on Dirt Rock Empire. Today, they’ve dropped a stark, emotionally raw performance video that lets the song do exactly what it was built to do: hit hard and linger.

Co-written by Jennings, David Wade and Waldrup herself, “Damned If I Stay” lives in that gray area most country songs try to sidestep — the moment in a relationship where leaving hurts and staying hurts worse. Jennings’ booming, weather-worn baritone plays beautifully against Waldrup’s warm, aching harmonies, giving the song the kind of push-pull tension that only a real duet can pull off. Think classic country storytelling filtered through a very modern kind of exhaustion.

“‘Damned If I Stay’ is about being caught between staying and leaving when both choices hurt,” Jennings said. “It’s that tension a lot of people don’t talk about. This song called for a duet, and Karen’s voice added the contrast that helped bring the full emotion of the story to life.”

For Waldrup — the former The Voice standout who’s been quietly stacking wins on the independent country circuit — the collaboration was personal. “Writing this song with Whey Jennings was such a career highlight for me,” she said. “He is such an emotional singer and that’s what this song needed. I have such a special friendship with Whey and it’s incredible to see that friendship spotlighted on such a personal song for both of us from our own life experiences.”

The track was produced by Gary Carter at Danny Parks’ Long Hollow Studio in Nashville, with a murderer’s row of players on board: Grand Ole Opry band guitarist Danny Parks, ACM Keyboard Player of the Year Mike Rojas (Ricky Skaggs, Hank Williams Jr.) on piano and organ, Joel Key (Cody Johnson, Thomas Rhett, Toby Keith) on acoustic, Carter himself on steel, Deanie Richardson (Del McCoury Band, Marty Stuart) on fiddle, and Garth Justice (Reba McEntire, Jo Dee Messina) on percussion. It’s the kind of pedigree that quietly separates a real country record from something merely wearing the hat.
