Villagers of Ioannina City Announce New Album ‘Venceremos,’ Share Epic “Ghosts in the Sky” Video

Greek heavy rock visionaries Villagers of Ioannina City are back, and they’ve brought bagpipes, zourna, and a whole dystopia with them. The band has announced their new studio album, Venceremos, arriving September 18 via Napalm Records, alongside the release of the towering lead single and video, “Ghosts in the Sky.”

If you’ve been following VIC since Age of Aquarius or the live triumph of Through Space and Time (Alive in Athens 2020), you already know these guys don’t do small gestures. Venceremos pushes further than anything they’ve done before — heavier, more direct, and unapologetically progressive. It’s the sound of a band sharpening their identity rather than bending to trends, and that’s a rare thing in 2026.

A Dystopian Concept Album With Something to Say

Venceremos (“we will win,” for those brushing up on their Spanish) is set in a dystopian future ruled by illusion, control, and fear. The record follows those who rise against a broken world, rejecting gods and modern kings in pursuit of freedom and meaning. Struggles, hopes, existential reflection — the band leans into all of it, arriving at one repeated truth: the quest is one, and its name is freedom.

Cue the epic guitars.

“Ghosts in the Sky” Sets the Tone

Lead single “Ghosts in the Sky” is a masterclass in atmosphere. Layered traditional instrumentation collides with pulsating basslines and cinematic guitar work, building a dense, ritualistic-psychedelic wall of heavy rock that feels every bit as ceremonial as it does confrontational.

“‘Ghosts in the Sky’ is the vessel that carries all our hopes and dreams,” the band shares. “It is a call to stand together in the face of fear, where hope travels like a distant star and freedom is worth every fight. It’s about defiance, unity, and believing in change, even when everybody says it won’t come.”

Heavy Rock Meets Hellenic Tradition

Produced and recorded by frontman Alex Karametis at Magnanimous X Studio in Greece, and mixed and mastered by Jacob Hansen at Hansen Studios, Venceremos is built for both clarity and depth. Bagpipes and zourna aren’t set dressing here — they’re structural, essential to the band’s sonic DNA. Folk textures and Hellenic elements crash into powerful riffs and dynamic arrangements, and the result is unmistakably their own.
