Craig Finn Rolls Out Full-Band Fall Tour With The Band of Forgiveness, Plus Summer Dates With Patterson Hood

Craig Finn is not one to sit still. The Hold Steady frontman turned prolific solo storyteller has just laid out a fall itinerary that would make even the most road-hardened lifer reach for a nap — and he’s stacking a summer co-headline run on top of it for good measure.

The headline news: Finn has announced The Man I’ve Always Been Tour, a full-band US headline run backed by The Band of Forgiveness, the Minneapolis-based trio of Nelson Devereaux, Joe Strachan, and Ethan Elseth that Finn assembled last year to reimagine his solo catalog. After a UK run earlier this year that wrapped with a sold-out night at London’s Union Chapel, the group is bringing that sharpened chemistry back stateside. Dates kick off November 10 at Portland’s Polaris Hall and roll through the West Coast before dipping into the Midwest, with a two-night stand at Berwyn, IL’s Fitzgerald’s serving as an obvious hometown-adjacent highlight.

“I had imagined a group of musicians that would help me take on some of my songs in a unique approach, one that let the stories shine through but still brought a high level of musicality,” Finn said of the band. “Each show the band ascended higher, and we were able to create dramatic musical narratives that were exciting and satisfying.”

Before November rolls around, Finn is teaming up with longtime friend Patterson Hood (Drive-By Truckers) for another leg of the Devils in the Details Tour. Joined by multi-instrumentalist Ben Hackett, the two songwriters will trade songs and stories in-the-round, kicking off July 9 at St. Paul’s Fitzgerald Theater before hitting Pennsylvania, Connecticut, New York, and Massachusetts. Finn is even teasing the possibility of a few unreleased songs sneaking into the setlist. Consider that an incentive.

And because a two-tour year apparently wasn’t enough, Finn will cross the Atlantic in October for a run of EU/UK dates supporting The Mountain Goats, starting October 5 in Helsinki and winding through Scandinavia, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands, Ireland, and the UK. The Band of Forgiveness will join him for the Manchester, Dublin, Glasgow, London, and Bristol dates.

All of this comes on the heels of Always Been, Finn’s sixth solo album, produced by Adam Granduciel of The War on Drugs and featuring contributions from Kathleen Edwards, Sam Fender, and members of Granduciel’s own band. It’s a story record about a clergyman without faith — his rise, fall, and redemption — accompanied by a 92-page companion book of short fiction called Lousy With Ghosts. Because of course it is.
