NEEDTOBREATHE Bare Their Souls on New Single “Last Drink” — A Song About Surrender and Starting Over
There’s a particular kind of song that only comes from an artist willing to look in the mirror without flinching. NEEDTOBREATHE just released one of those songs.
Out today, “Last Drink” is the latest offering from the GRAMMY-nominated South Carolina-bred rock outfit, and it’s easily one of the most personal moments in their two-decade catalog. Written from a season of upheaval and clarity for frontman Bear Rinehart, the track dwells in that pivotal, knife-edge moment when a decision stops being an idea and becomes a new beginning.

“‘Last Drink’ is a song about the freedom that comes from The Long Surrender,” Rinehart says. “Sometimes pursuing what we care about means leaving other things behind. There were several things I chose to leave behind in this chapter of my life, but the things I gave up in the last year haven’t felt like sacrifices at all in hindsight. Their absence has created more space for me to care about the ones I love.”
Sonically, the song is unmistakably NEEDTOBREATHE — Rinehart’s weathered, soulful vocal sitting atop that signature blend of Americana grit, gospel-tinged harmonies, and arena-ready rock. But there’s a quieter confidence at the center of it, the sound of a band that has stopped chasing and started arriving.
“Last Drink” follows their recent full-length, The Long Surrender, produced by nine-time GRAMMY-winner Dave Cobb (Chris Stapleton, Jason Isbell, Sturgill Simpson). That record — and this single — captures a band awakened to its truest purpose more than 20 years into a career that has yielded billions of streams, multiple GRAMMY nominations, and one of the most devoted fanbases in modern rock.
If “Last Drink” is any indication, the next chapter is going to hit hard in the best way.
NEEDTOBREATHE hits the road this August for a sprawling North American amphitheater run, including stops at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles, The Salt Shed in Chicago, and a can’t-miss night at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, CO.
